The films of Shindo in the 1960s

Kaneto Shindo Japanese film director, screenwriter, film producer, and author He directed 48 films and wrote scripts for 238. His best known films as a director include Children of Hiroshima, The Naked Island, Onibaba, Kuroneko and A Last Note.

Kuroneko (1968) 1968 black and white Japanese horror film. An adaptation of a supernatural folktale. Set during a civil war in Japan’s Heian period, the spirits of a woman and her daughter-in-law seek revenge after losing their lives to a brutal incident.

Onibaba (1964) Japanese historical drama horror film. Set during a civil war in the fourteenth century where two women kill soldiers to steal their possessions.

Children of Hiroshima (1952) 1952 Japanese feature film – a docudrama made with extreme emotions. Fiction and documentary exist in equal parts, which is why it’s also considered a docufiction as well.

He was a pioneer of independent film production in japan He experiments with his films – for example documentary- like realism mesmerizing cinematography and no dialogue. He also does scriptwriting, receiving his first screen credit on Yoshihito Ochiai's Women Advance South in 1940; he eventually wrote more than 200 scripts for other directors. His script for The Ball at the Anjo House (1947), which won top prize in the critics' poll for the film magazine Kinema Junpo
