Poetry Power… By: Leader: Shaquille Hall Presented By: Nikeah Howard Cayla Edmunds Arnett Young

What is poetry…? There are many various definitions of poetry, but there can only be one. Poetry is Literary work in which special intensity is given to the expression of feelings and ideas by the use of distinctive style and rhythm.

The history of poetry… The history of poetry is quite confusing, but it all may have started between 1700- 1200 B.C. (or even before that!) Some say it is/was written on the pyramid walls. One of the oldest poems are from the “Epic of Gilgamesh”. From Mesopotamia. Other old poems are “Odyssey” and “Vedas”.

Edgar Allen Poe. Born on January 19, 1809 – October 7, 1849)Poe was an American author, poet, editor and literary critic, considered part of the American Romantic Period. He had many life problems, what with living alone, and resulting in financial difficulties (in his life and his career), but he was an amazing poet. He married his 13-year-old cousin at the age old 23. He published about 57 poems, but the most famous was “The Raven.” Sadly, he passed away on October 7, 1849.

Evening star,…

Poetry Analysis! 1. In my opinion, nothing struck me about the poem is the fact that the title is misleading. 2. The poems’ title seemed to be referring to the planets and space: “Evening Star”. Although the name sound like it’s talking about Venus (it’s nickname is Evening Star), it seemed to be talking abut our solar system. 3. The situation in the poem seemed like there wasn’t one… 4. The speaker was Edgar himself; He was talking about the Solar system and the things in it, so the relation must’ve been science. 5.Eight lines in the 1st paragraph, etc. He changed the number of lines in each paragraph; He organized the paragraphs in a neat formation; The punctuation was in the correct spots, showing neatness and clarity. 6. The language was from an early period of time(a time were love was relevant; Like Shakespeare: t’was, etc.); The word choice was beautiful! Great word choice!; The words were easy to understand. 7. I could visualize the stars, the sun, space itself, the planets, the coldness in the air, heaven above, clouds, and a beam of white light shining through the darkness in the shadows. 8. The purpose of the poem seemed to be showing how beautiful the solar system is. Poetry is a way of expressing feelings, feelings on a certain object, or just simply describe one’s purpose of the poem. It’s a way to release emotion. Prose doesn’t rhyme like poetry does (sometimes). Prose is a form of language, and poetry isn’t. but poetry and prose speak the minds of people. Novels, essays, etc. are the form of prose. Poetry seems to take the form of anything. poetry and prose talk about anything: From life, to death. Poetry is an amazing way of rhythm and style. Poetry seems to change itself of generations, and will never go out of style!

How far back was the history on poetry go? The real answer isn’t known, but the first poems known go back as far as 1700 B.C. One of the oldest poems is “Vedas”, recorded around 1700-1200 B.C. Another old one is “The Odyssey”, recorded around 800-675 B.C. But no-one knows for sure when it began, we can only assume.

What part of the world did Poetry Originate? Some say poetry originated among the walls of Egypt, and others say from Greek poets. The oldest is from Greek poets, in the time before Christ. (B.C)

Who were some of the first recognized poets? Shakespeare was a very well know poet, recognized in around 1589. Phillis Wheatley was the first recognized African American Poet, in the colonial period.

How has poetry changed over the years? Poets are usually influenced by their surroundings and events that are happening during their time. Things that happened 100 years ago aren’t happening now. So many contemporary poets do not familiarize with the same subjects. 100 years ago, poets were writing about the war and the dislocation they had from society. As technology has evolved, so has the subject. Poetry has many modern poets, and they tend to write about the present or future. As we live now in society, we tend to think about tomorrow, rather than 100 years ago: when they used to think only about days in advance.
