Undergraduate Records and the University Vision, Mission, and Core Values Welcome to Module 1.1 – Undergraduate Records and the University Vision, Mission, and Core Values. This training module is designed to assist the employee who works with undergraduate student records in understanding the influence of the university's vision, mission, and core values on the daily work environment. Module 1.1

Objectives of this training Have a familiarity of the development of the vision, mission and core values of the university. Observe the influence of the vision, mission, and core values on the work of the records office. Understand the importance of customer service to constituents based on the vision, mission, and core values. The objectives of this training will include: 1. Introduction of what vision, mission, and core value are and how they are developed by the institution. 2. Obtain a greater understanding of the influence of the three items on the direction of their offices or campuses. And finally, to link items 1 and 2 back to what this all means for the student who attends Wayland Baptist University.

Origination of the University Vision, Mission, and Core Values Each states specifically the characteristics of the university for the present and the future. Current vision, mission, and core values established for the 2010-2015 University Strategic Plan by the University Strategic Planning Council based on environmental scan and input from the university community. Reviewed annually to determine if there should be any changes or revisions. Influence the Planning, Budgeting, and Effectiveness Report (PBER) process. Where did the concepts of vision, mission, and core values originate? There are several venues of origination. The primary influencer of a mission statement is the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (Core Requirement 2.4). The vision and core values assist in the development of the mission statement. Therefore, each specifically state the characteristics of the university now and for the future. The current statements were generated out of the development of the 2010-15 University Strategic Plan using the environmental scan and focus group meetings at each campus. According to the Annual Planning Cycle, the Strategic Planning Council is required to annually review each component to determine if any modifications are needed. But how does this effect you? In the annual planning cycle, the council itself conducts environmental scans and performs a SWOT analysis (analysis of Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats, and Trends). These findings are then sent to the planning groups (led by administrators to their directors/executive directors) and then on to the individual departments or campuses for the annual Planning, Budgeting, and Effectiveness Reports or PBER. Now that you know the route for the dissemination of information, each of us are responsible for carrying out the vision, mission, and core values of Wayland Baptist University.

University Strategic Planning Policy 1.3.2 - The University Strategic Planning Council is responsible for initiating activities required to address issues of strategic planning, budgeting, and institutional effectiveness. The primary responsibilities of the University Strategic Planning Council include the following: assist in guiding the strategic planning, budgeting, and evaluation efforts of the university; review and refine the university's mission and goals through maintenance of the university strategic plan and master facilities plan; recommend other relevant goals related to strategic planning, budgeting, and/or institutional effectiveness; assist in establishing measurement criteria to determine progress in meeting university goals; and review accomplishments related to strategic planning, budgeting, and institutional effectiveness goals. University strategic planning is outlined in policy 1.3.2. From that policy, we see the purpose of the council as well as the responsibilities. Some of these were outlined in the previous slide, however, let’s quickly walk through each of these so we can get a better feel for what the council does and how its work may affect us. The council is required to initiate activities for the movement of the strategic plan on its course, the development of departmental and university budgets based on the plan, and documentation of how the plan is completed through institutional effectiveness reporting. Five responsibilities of the council include: assist in guiding the strategic planning, budgeting, and evaluation efforts of the university; review and refine the university's mission and goals through maintenance of the university strategic plan and master facilities plan; recommend other relevant goals related to strategic planning, budgeting, and/or institutional effectiveness; assist in establishing measurement criteria to determine progress in meeting university goals; and review accomplishments related to strategic planning, budgeting, and institutional effectiveness goals.

Case Statement Central Themes of the 2010-15 Strategic Plan: Sustainability - As a Christian university who believes strongly in good stewardship of all our resources, Wayland is committed to pursuing initiatives that help us protect our environment and our finances in order to be responsible citizens of the earth and God’s kingdom. Versatility - In a rapidly changing world, Wayland knows it must remain relevant to its students in terms of technology, learning methods, and programming in order to prepare students for careers in the 21st century Community - Believing that loyalty comes through deliberate measures to build community among students across campuses, Wayland plans to increase this on both a local and global perspective. For Future Generations is the theme of the 2010-15 University Strategic Plan. Encompassed in that plan are three central themes: sustainability, versatility, and community. Vision Definition: A uniting theme and attributes that give character to the institution. Wayland Baptist University Vision: Wayland Baptist University will be an environmentally responsible, international multi-campus system offering innovative, academically challenging, and distinctively Christian undergraduate and graduate education through multiple delivery systems to military and civilian students around the world. What is a vision? One definition is that a vision is a uniting theme and set of attributes that give future character to the institution. What is the current vision of the university? Wayland Baptist University will be an environmentally responsible, international multi-campus system offering innovative, academically challenging, and distinctively Christian undergraduate and graduate education through multiple delivery systems to military and civilian students around the world.

Mission Definition: Mission statements lead both the strategic planning and strategic management process (i.e., guide everyday business as afforded by planning and processes). Wayland Baptist University Mission: Wayland Baptist University exists to educate students in an academically challenging, learning-focused and distinctively Christian environment for professional success and service to God and humankind. What is a mission? A mission is a statement that leads both the strategic planning of the university and the strategic management. That is, the mission guides the everyday business that is driven by the planning and processes developed. The current Mission Statement is: Wayland Baptist University exists to educate students in an academically challenging, learning-focused and distinctively Christian environment for professional success and service to God and humankind.

Core Values Definition: a set of core beliefs or desires that guide and motivate our attitudes. Wayland Baptist University Core Values: Commitment to Student Learning Christian Distinctiveness and Baptist Heritage Integrity, Diversity, Trust and Respect Excellence and Innovation Service to Our Communities Personal, Professional and Spiritual Development Stewardship of Our Resources Planning and Accountability Environmentally Responsible What are core values? Core values are the core beliefs or desires that guide and motivate the university. Wayland’s core values are as follows: Commitment to Student Learning Christian Distinctiveness and Baptist Heritage Integrity, Diversity, Trust and Respect Excellence and Innovation Service to Our Communities Personal, Professional and Spiritual Development Stewardship of Our Resources Planning and Accountability Environmentally Responsible By now many of us may be thinking “So what! How do these things – strategic planning, PBER, university vision, mission and core values – really effect me on a daily basis?” Lets look at the vision, mission, and core values individually and see how they relate back to the academic records portion of our jobs.

The “So what?” of it all… Wayland Baptist University Vision: Wayland Baptist University will be an environmentally responsible, international multi-campus system offering innovative, academically challenging, and distinctively Christian undergraduate and graduate education through multiple delivery systems to military and civilian students around the world. University Vision – Let’s look at the words that bolded in red and see how each influence what we do for the former, current, and prospective students of the university. First – multi-campus system offering innovative…distinctively Christian undergraduate education– how are we innovative as advisors, evaluators, and auditors? Are we looking for quicker easier solutions that may go beyond what we are currently doing? Are we presenting ourselves in a Christian manner to the undergraduate students we serve or represent? So often when things do not go right, we look to point fingers instead of being an agent for change and finding solutions. Finding a solution and encouraging each other for the sake of the student and the institution is the right thing to do. Because Wayland is so diverse in locations, we all have to carry the banner of being innovative and distinctively Christian every moment of every day. Second – through multiple delivery systems to military and civilian students around the world – With the advent of our online learning environment, we now are able to supply courses to students virtually anywhere. With this educational delivery system must also come the ability to deliver academic services such as academic counseling or advising. In order to do this, each of us who are involved with academic records must be willing to move forward and make sure our service exceeds expectation. If we don’t we will find ourselves without students to serve.

The “So what?” of it all… Wayland Baptist University Mission: Wayland Baptist University exists to educate students in an academically challenging, learning-focused and distinctively Christian environment for professional success and service to God and humankind. Much like the vision, the mission indicates that Wayland exists to educate students. Part of the educational process is to assist them in the navigation of their academic programs and provide the best opportunities to maximize transfer as well as total degree program hours. In a political environment that is being held accountable for excess costs to students, it is critical that we assist the students in an ethical manner consistent with this mission. Wayland has pioneered the development of adult education for more than 40 years and it is important that we hold a standard that is beneficial to the integrity of the university and the well-being of our students.

The “So what?” of it all… Wayland Baptist University Core Values: Commitment to Student Learning Christian Distinctiveness and Baptist Heritage Integrity, Diversity, Trust and Respect Excellence and Innovation Service to Our Communities Personal, Professional and Spiritual Development Stewardship of Our Resources Planning and Accountability Environmentally Responsible Of the long list of core values, those that stand out more for the academic records area include: Commitment to Student Learning – one of the primary reasons that students attend an institution of higher education is to gain knowledge or for career advancement. In our service to students through the administration of academic records, it is our responsibility to make sure our service assists in facilitating student learning. When things fall into place for the students their ability to learn happens more easily. However, when service to students is less than par or menial, then students tend to experience undue stress, which may interrupt the learning process. Some may say that is just “part of the educational experience,” however, reduction of the stress for events related to Wayland is everyone’s job. Integrity, Diversity, Trust, and Respect – Each of these components are critical to the success of providing students quality and timely service. Every advisor, every evaluator, every auditor, every employee must have integrity with what they are doing, trust the other person that the job is being done correctly with the interest of the university and the student in mind, and we must treat each other with the utmost respect. We have all been brought to Wayland Baptist University in order to fulfill God’s will and purpose through this institution. Let’s not forget why we are here and live daily by this primary core value. Excellence and Innovation – A question that should be asked by any person in records is: “How can we do things better and more efficiently for the university and maintain the integrity of the university degree programs?” What must be understood with this core value is that we are all looking to serve the student in the best manner possible. However, sometimes resources are not always readily available to us to accomplish this task so we must look inwardly to determine the best way to supply the innovation. With innovation comes communication. So, as we try to innovate remember the previous core value of Integrity, Diversity, Trust, and Respect and may our work move forward to be excellent. Stewardship of Our Resources – This core value has many “fingers” that touch the other core values, such as of Commitment to Student Learning, Excellence and Innovation, as well as the Integrity, Diversity, Trust and Respect and the final point of Planning and Accountability. As an institution that is primarily tuition driven for its revenue, we all should be conscious of the resources that are used. We must communicate effectively with each other on issues of training and ways that we can be innovative in our service to the students. Planning and Accountability – As you have discovered in the first part of the presentation, the planning and accountability of the university belongs to every employee. It is important for each of us to have an understanding of this process and what it means to our work at Wayland. The accountability aspect goes beyond what our departments or campuses are responsible for in the grand scheme of completing the university strategic plan. Personal accountability for what we do on a daily basis assures that we are being good stewards of the resources afforded the university as well as committing to student learning, providing excellence and innovation, and gaining personal integrity, trust and respect.
