Presentation transcript:

Chapter 4 —The Carew Murder Case L.O. Examine the implications of the social and historical relevance on the text.

Starter Examine the following paintings from nineteenth century Romantic artists who emphasise feeling, emotion, and intuition in their choice of subjects and artistic style. They were interested in all aspects of fantasy: imagination, dreams, nightmares, the infernal, and the macabre. Infernal— Relating to Hell or the Underworld Macabre—Disturbing and horrifying due to depicting death and or injury

They explored what happens when the human mind goes into the darker side of consciousness or when reason is asleep. For example, the Romantic artist, Theodore Gericault, was interested in the irrational states of the human mind and the idea that the mind affected the physical appearance of a person. He created many studies of the mentally ill and criminally insane. Task—Study the following paintings, listing the detail and describing the paintings as fully as possible. What image is the artist trying to convey? How do you think they relate to the human mind? How could they relate to Jekyll and Hyde?

The Nightmare by Henry Fuseli 1781

The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters by Francisco Goya 1798

Saturn Devouring One of His Children by: Francisco Goya 1819-1823

Task— You are writing for the local newspaper who has a high gentile readership. You are the journalist reporting the incident of the Carew murder case. Write an article describing the incident utilising at least 2 interviews (1 being the maid at the window) and another of your choosing. Consider how you would describe the event factoring in the time period and context of the novella.

Think about… How would a Victorian, gentile audience respond? What will your headline be? Attention grabbing! You may inject some slight opinions but not alter the facts ie “The poor, uneducated maid nearly died of fright at what she witnessed just outside the window she was sitting at.”

Also… How will your writing style be different knowing that you’re writing a news article? Paragraph lengths? What picture will you include? Please include a relevant picture! Write about a page in length Challenge—Can you incorporate some of the vocabulary you’ve learnt while reading this novella into your article?
