Because it celebrates the end of winter and the start of spring. It ends immediately before Lent. It also involves public celebrations, parades, and public street parties. People often dress up in costumes during the celebrations.

The Carnevale starts 26 of December and ends on Shrove Tuesday. This Carnevale is held in Venice,Italy.

They dress up in fancy cloths and wear masks. They have parties and parades. And there is lots of dancing.

They wear costumes with masks (maschere). They wear it because everyone gets treated the same because nobody knows who’s behind the mask. Some dresses have beads on them. They might also wear matching hats to go with the dress.

There is no special food. Carnevale is mainly about the festival celebration, costumes and masks.

They play music with drums and guitars. They play this music because it is a big celebration that celebrates the end of winter and the start of spring.

They throw confetti from windows of houses and there are parades. They have parades with floats [stages on wheels] and coloured foam and fake manganelli (clubs).

And remember the carnevale is the time of year when you should expect someone to pull a joke on you.
