Agenda What is iPrint? Planning iPrint deployment Novell BrainShare 2002 Agenda What is iPrint? Planning iPrint deployment Installing iPrint system components Deploying the iPrint client and printers TUT265—Novell iPrint Deployment Strategies

Vision…one Net Mission A world where networks of all types—corporate and public, intranets, extranets, and the Internet—work together as one Net and securely connect employees, customers, suppliers, and partners across organizational boundaries Mission To solve complex business and technical challenges with Net business solutions that enable people, processes, and systems to work together and our customers to profit from the opportunities of a networked world

What Is iPrint? iPrint extends traditional network printing into the Internet, giving anytime, anywhere access to users and administrators

What Is iPrint? Built on Novell Distributed Print Services™ (NDPS®) Added support for Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) New Novell print client Web accessibility features Built on Novell Distributed Print Services™ (NDPS®) Added support for Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) New Novell print client Web accessibility features

What Is iPrint? Added Support for IPP Printer agent NDPS Printer gateways LPR IPP QMS

What Is iPrint? Built on NDPS Added support for Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) New Novell print client Web accessibility features

What Is iPrint? New Novell Print Client Uses IPP protocol (Internet standard based on HTTP) Supports SSL Small footprint on client Installable from web Not dependent on Client32™ Persistent and non-persistent printers

What Is iPrint? New Novell Print Client Automatic install of client updates Enhanced support for printer default (i.e., paper size) Automatic driver download

What Is iPrint? Built on NDPS Added support for Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) New Novell print client Web accessibility features

What Is iPrint? Web Accessibility Features Install print client from web browser Install printers from web browser iPrint default web page Custom web pages with maps, floor plans Company portal Commercial printing sites Manage printers/print system from web browser Map design tool

What Is iPrint? iPrint enables… Printing from applications To printers across the hall or around the world With confidentiality Through private or public networks With guaranteed fidelity Managing printers On the local network or in branch offices From home On the road

Other iPrint Sessions For more information on features and benefits of iPrint, see session IO105 Tuesday 12:00 noon—Ballroom E Thursday 1:30 pm—Ballroom I Friday 3:15 pm—Ballroom E

Agenda Installing iPrint system components What is iPrint? Planning iPrint deployment Installing iPrint system components Deploying the iPrint client and printers

Planning iPrint Deployment Options to consider Clustering Distributed vs. centralized Internet access to printers, secure printing (SSL) Works great with Novell NetWare® 4 Number of printers per server Strongly recommended options DNS

How Many Printers Per Server? A 550 Mhz Pentium III server hosting iPrint can process 1,440,000,000,000 bytes of data a month printing eight hours a day 20 days a month Assuming Novell Corp. Tree Continuous printing during business hours Printer duty cycle: 150,000 pages/month (80 KB) 100 KB/page (100 KB/job) Approximately 100 printers per server 7,500 pages/printer/day (50 pages) (15,000 printers)

Other iPrint Sessions For more information on performance factors and configuration, see session TUT205 Tuesday 4:30 pm—Ballroom J Wednesday 2:15 pm—Ballroom J

Planning iPrint Deployment

Planning iPrint Deployment Novell IS&T example Fact It’s more efficient and less prone to problems if the network information (queues, Novell eDirectory™ object information) that iPrint needs can be resolved on the local server Problem Place replicas of all partitions that have objects referenced by iPrint (user, printer, NDPS manager) and queues on a single server Solution Separate print tree (single eDirectory partition, one server) iPrint objects are created in the print tree Use Novell DirXML™ to synchronize users from corporate tree into the print tree

Agenda Installing iPrint system components What is iPrint? Planning iPrint deployment Installing iPrint system components Deploying the iPrint client and printers

Installing and Configuring iPrint System Components If you have already deployed NDPS, you are only a couple of mouse clicks away from iPrint

Installing and Configuring iPrint System Components (cont.) Required Install iPrint Create server components (broker, manager, printer) Enable iPrint access to printer (done automatically on new printers in SP1) Optional Customize web pages for printing

Installing and Configuring iPrint System Components (cont.) System installation iPrint not selected by default If secure printing is desired, iPrint needs port 443

Installing server components NDPS broker NDPS manager Printer agents Default web page

iManage iPrint Object Creation Create broker, NDPS manager, and printer objects

Enable iPrint Access to Printer Enable IPP access to the printer “Require SSL” enables SLP encryption on printer
