“Learning through play” workshop Welcome

Aims of the workshop To share how we monitor & record learning through the EYFS framework To show how we target each child to extend & support learning through activities & play To share & demonstrate the importance and value of learning through play To demonstrate to parents how you can support your child with their learning at home, and let you have a play and learn within your play too! To discuss the importance of how having consistent boundaries and routines ...... makes children feel secure, happy and confident = motivated and confident learners

The EYFS framework The three Prime areas & four Specific areas Age groups: Cubs = 16 – 26 months (level 1) Bears = 22 – 36 months (level 2) Swans – 30 – 50 months (3) & 40 – 60 months (4)(ELG) Making learning fun, active and exciting

2build a profile web suite to log evidence. Capturing significant achievements via 2BUILD app We log achievements on their learning journal log Then we evaluate: assess progress, log their EAL (Expected Age Level) and then make targets for next steps ....

Next steps & targets.....

How to support my child’s learning and targets at home? Prime Areas..... Personal, Social & Emotional skills Communication and Language skills Physical development Or the Specific Areas: Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, Expressive Art What skills does my child need to develop and how can I support and extend their skills?

What are the swans learning? Children need lots of practice & repetition to become secure in a skill. We give lots of time to consolidate their learning through a variety of “purposeful play” opportunities & adult led activities

Practical workshop time “learning is fun!” Physical Development Communication & Language Development Time to find out how you child learns through active and play based activities. Activities need to be fun, exciting and motivating so that your child is excited to learn!

Happy children = motivated learners.... For children to feel happy, secure and confident they need to have clear and consistent boundaries and routines. DECIDE, ESTABLISH, SHARE Without boundaries children are insecure, demanding and miserable - they will keep testing you. Happy children will be motivated, enthusiastic ,eager and excited to learn

At Tidbury our routine starts the moment your child walks through the door!

We support our children closely to help them to learn the routines and gain skills, independence & confidence.

This is a gradual process so children feel happy, secure, confident and eager to be independent. Children who know what is expected of them and have consistent boundaries are happy & confident.

We have routines for everything! Who is front of the line today? Who is ringing the bell? Who are the water chiefs? At home establishing routines with consistent boundaries = secure & happy children Meal times Bed time Story and play times

DECIDE, ESTABLISH, SHARE Golden Rules: For your children (keep rules simple) For you as a parent/carer (be consistent, be fair & above all don’t nag!) DECIDE, ESTABLISH, SHARE

Listening & Attention skills = Developing two-way respect We listen to adults .......... Eyes looking, ears listening

We listen to our friends and use key phrases, kind words and share ideas ..... Big Bear Conor says “Help me please” to Swan Emily..... “Team work, makes the dream work” say Ronan and Manraj.

“Use the three step strategy” Time Out strategy “Use the three step strategy” Stop their behaviour, explain BRIEFLY Give “Warning” Give Time out. Where it is easy to go wrong....

Step 1. Stop behaviour & explain BRIEFLY Eye level BRIEF & calm chat holding hands Put on your sensible head. Have hug / high 5, to show you are happy.

Step 2. Give “Warning” Yellow card “warning” Change activity, let choose – limit choices. Repeat: Put on your sensible head. Have hug / high 5, to show you are happy.

Step 3. Time out No conversation – say calmly “It’s time out” Sit out, timer out of reach If moves off, return. Repeat: Put on your sensible head. Have hug / high 5, to show you are happy. ALWAYS MOVE ON after time out, do not refer back or nag!

Other things you may consider to introduce at home to establish routine ... Sticker chart Family meetings Helping your child to listen / wait TOP POINTS TO REMEMBER Learning should always be fun Happy children = motivated & confident learners Establish routine, be consistent , be fair. There is no such thing as a perfect parent – enjoy the journey with your child 

Thank you for listening Questions? Evaluation sheets Hand outs.
