In Groups a) Does this song support or is it against the war In Groups   a) Does this song support or is it against the war? Explain your answer making reference to the song and also the music.     C) What are the good things about using a source like this to find out about the past?

Turkey had joined the War on the German side in October 1914 Turkey had joined the War on the German side in October 1914. In December 1914 Turkey attacked Russia as well in the hope of regaining land in the Balkans. Winston Churchill HELLO! I am Winston Churchill, the First Lord of the Admiralty. Myself and some other believe that Germany and Austria-Hungary could be weakened by attacking Turkey in the East.

Who were the ANZACS?

The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC)

THE PLAN The Gallipoli Plan Turkey controlled the Dardanelles – the narrow entrance to the Black Sea - and this was stopping Britain getting supplies through to Russia, and perhaps even troops. If Britain could land troops on the Gallipoli Peninsula – they could take the Dardanelles, and then go on to take Constantinople, the capital of Turkey. Then other nearby countries like Greece, Romania and Bulgaria might join in on Britain’s side, and help the Allies to win the War, by attacking Germany from the East. S Yelland KHS

What problems would you face when trying to attack this beach What problems would you face when trying to attack this beach? – Brainstorm 2 minutes

THE REALITY

Slaughter On The Beaches The operation was badly planned and went wrong almost as soon as it began. The navy attacked first, and destroyed 4 Turkish forts. 2) But they gave the Turks enough time to reform and three British battleships were sunk by mines.

Slaughter On The Beaches – Gallipoli 1915 3) Then soldiers were sent to attack. They were caught on the beaches without cover and were mown down by Turkish fire from the hills above. 5) So these troops had to dig in and a new kind of trench warfare started on the Eastern Front – except that conditions were much hotter and they lacked supplies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-kVrdc9g_s

"Bullets struck fireworks out of the stones along the beach "Bullets struck fireworks out of the stones along the beach. The men did not wait to be hit, but wherever they landed they simply rushed straight up the steep slopes. Other small boats...were digging for the beach with oars. These occupied the attention of the Turks in the trenches, and almost before the Turks had time to collect their senses, the first boatloads were well up towards the trenches. Few Turks awaited the bayonet. " Australian official correspondent, and later official war historian, CEW (Charles) Bean on the island of Imbros, 1915.

The charge of the 3rd Light Horse Brigade at the Nek. What can you infer from this painting? (3 marks) S Yelland KHS

Eventually…. December 1915 135,000 soldiers were withdrawn.

"HMS Cornwallis, the last ship to leave Gallipoli in the evacuation of 19-20 December 1915, returns fire to the Turkish guns shelling her as she prepares to sail. In the background stores at Suvla Bay, set alight to prevent their use by the Turks, can be seen burning.”
