Content and Organization Choose either a topic outline or a sentence outline: A topic outline is written using words and phrases A sentence outline is written using complete sentences

The Form and Logic of an Outline Follow the correct outline form Identify the major sections of you paper. These will be your main (Roman numeral) headings Biography Works Impact

The Form and Logic of an Outline Divide the main headings into subheadings and then into sub-subheadings, as needed. You can never have only one subheading; you must have at least two. Biography Early Life School/Work Death Works Work 1 Plot Theme importance

Guidelines Write either a sentence outline or topic outline. Don’t mix the two. A number or letter precedes each heading. Each number or letter is followed by a period or enclosed in parentheses. Every heading begins with a capital letter. Indentations show a heading’s level of importance. An indented heading is a subdivision of the preceding heading. If any heading calls for subheadings, there must be two or more. The wording of headings within a section must be parallel.
