Ending of French Indo-China War

Ending/Effects of Indochina War Ho Chi Minh achieved goal of negotiating from point of strength! The Geneva Accords: 1954 peace settlement that divided Vietnam into two separate nations along the 17th parallel (also divided Korea) USSR, US, France, Britain and China Ended French occupation (Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia = independent) Ho Chi Minh became president of the new Communist North Vietnam. Ngo Dinh Diem became president of the anti-Communist South Vietnam (aided by Emperor Bao Dai) Elections were supposed to be held in 1956 to unify Vietnam, but South Vietnam refused and it remained divided. This “solution” led directly to U.S. occupation and the Vietnam War
