World Studies - Do Now 9/30 Bellringer: What differences do you notice about the differences in geography between Greece and Ancient China? (Greece map zoomed in a lot closer)

WS Unit 1: Rise and Fall October 13th: In-class essay on the question: Using GET PAST, explain what causes civilizations to rise and fall? Unit Test - October 16th OR October 20th Essential Question: What causes civilizations to rise and fall?

Greek Geography Mountainous and uneven terrain Little fertile land lacked resources like timber and metals Mostly surrounded by sea Islands Hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters Mostly streams and small rivers Small population

How did Greece’s Geography impact their lifestyle?

Consider: Similarities and differences between Greek and Chinese geography How would greek geography impact: development of civilization interaction with other groups

Values and Actions As you watch, consider what kinds of values would drive the actions you see here

Ron Swanson values personal freedom Details to support: Bobby Knight photo (ran his team his way, winner) gun promotes personal space celebrates bootlegger (breaking unnecessary law)

Athens v Sparta You will read about either Athens or Sparta work alone or with a partner Ask questions about the reading! If you’re halfway into it and you still can’t identify any values, talk to someone. Consider core values about that society How would those core values drive their laws and style of government? Write this in your notebook. Your exit ticket will require you to recall this info.

With your peers Determine a one word value for that society Use examples from text to support your value statement Elect representatives to share each point

Sparta values (1) militaristic (2)isolation (3) simplicity Examples: Law created for boys to train at young age, could not retire from military until 60 years old No trading only conquering outsiders Dressed simply, no flashiness, no swag :(

Athens values (1) social (2) free speech (3) arts and beauty (4) academics Examples: active traders and exchanged ideas(arts, architecture), govt leaders were voted in Democracy and open debate in govt emphasis on architecture, fashion-minded, swag :-) scholars hold higher status than military

Wrapping Up: Complete the exit ticket on your assigned City-state ONLY: What did Athens value as a society? How did their values impact their laws and style of government? What did Sparta value as a society? How did their values impact their laws and style of government? HW: Greek Political Systems Readings and answer comprehension questions

World Studies 10/2 Do Now: How important was the spiritual world in Athenian democracy? Spartan oligarchy? Dynastic cycle? Take out your homework

WS Unit 1: Rise and Fall October 6th and 8th: In-class essay prep October 13th: In-class essay on the question: Using GET PAST, explain what causes civilizations to rise and fall? Unit Test - October 16th OR October 20th Essential Question: What causes civilizations to rise and fall?

Athenian Democracy vs Spartan Oligarchy Find someone with a similar suit. Answer the question: What were two strengths of Athenian democracy and two strengths of Spartan oligarchy? What were two weaknesses of democracy and two weaknesses of Spartan oligarchy?

Spartan Oligarchy - small group of ppl that rules Strengths Election of officials women considered citizens focus on military leads to conquering and staying isolated from other cultures wisest and oldest run for office more efficient cuz of few voices Weaknesses voting by screaming = dumb, inefficient wealth = power only a few actually make laws no competition from youth, leading to all old males in office no freedom of speech

Athenian Democracy Strengths Weaknesses ALL Citizens had a say in laws Power based on ability not wealth Open to diff opinions In favor of majority (developed a consensus) Weaknesses Randomly chosen council members (don’t know what you are going to get in a govt official) inefficient and takes 4eva to make decisions, yo only males were citizens, no opinions from women and slaves early on, power based on class, but this changed over time Minorities drool

What role should the spiritual world play in our government?

Hippocrates: The Sacred Disease We will read excerpts from The Sacred Disease as a class The “sacred disease” is epilepsy, believed to be from the gods Hippocrates disagrees On your own, read your assigned paragraph and find evidence that supports Hippocrates argument.

Argument: Seizures are not a “sacred” disease Evidence:

What does Socrates question? Socrates: And what do you say of piety, Euthyphro? Is not piety, according to your definition, loved by all the gods? Euthyphro: Certainly. Socrates: Because it is pious or holy, or for some other reason? Euthyphro: No, that is the reason. Socrates: It is loved because it is holy, not holy because it is loved?

On your own: In your notebook, write Hippocrates values: In your notebook, write Socrates values: In your notebook, How would these values lead to the Greek political systems of democracy and oligarchy?
