Research on Horror Films By Hannah Jones, Corey Buckler and Katie Harris

These are a few example of what we watched… What we did Before starting to design our own Horror film, we researched others to get some idea of what shot types, colour, costumes and the sound effects that were used. These are a few example of what we watched…

1978 Halloween

From watching this film we got the make-up idea to put into ours From watching this film we got the make-up idea to put into ours. The make-up that has been used in this film for one particular character is a plain white face with dark eyes. This will make our character come across as scary.

Night of the 1968 Living Dead

From watching this film we got our costume idea From watching this film we got our costume idea. They use very plain and bland clothing, using the colours black and white. This shows who is good (white) and bad (black).

Saw 2004

In this film we got the idea of the type of story we are going to use In this film we got the idea of the type of story we are going to use. There is a shot in Saw where a man is trying to reach for his mobile phone. From this we have decided to make one of our main character to have a mobile phone and receive a call. This makes it more intense.

Shutter 2004

Like in the film Halloween we also got the make-up design idea from Shutter as well. There is a remake of this film from 2008, however this is the first one which was made in 2004. It gave us the idea to use pale face make-up as it makes the audience know that the character is scary and possessed.

1998 Ring

Ring was a good film to help us with our ideas Ring was a good film to help us with our ideas. We used this to help us with the clothing and make-up ideas. Plain and bold, we knew that this would suit our film because it not only was it the same genre but also the same type of characters were in it.

Sound effects Once we had watched all these films we decided on the sound effects that we were going to use in our film. The most common one that was used in most of the films was screaming, and we decided that we would put it in our film as it makes the scene more intense and the audience get more interested in what is going to happen throughout the rest of the film

Sound effects - continued Also the other sound effects we got from films that we have decided to use are; Heavy Breathing Heartbeat Mobile phone tone Laughing Knocking Footsteps

We found this effective and decided to use this in our film. Shot types – close up Many different shot types were used throughout all of these films however when there were intense moments in the film the camera would tend to zoom in and do a close up of the character to show what their facial expressions were. We found this effective and decided to use this in our film.

Shot types – other shots Although there were many close up shots throughout these films there were also others. For example in Ring there is a long shot of Samara. This shows the type of costume she is wearing and the audience can relate to the type of character she is. Also wide angle or establishing shots are used to show the setting of the place and also lets the audience start guessing what is going to happen.
