What are you wondering?

Who is a refugee?

A refugee is someone who has been forced to leave his or her country because of persecution, war, or violence. A refugee has a well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group. Most likely, they cannot return home or are afraid to do so.

Who is a migrant?

Migrants choose to move not because of a direct threat of persecution or death, but mainly to improve their lives by finding work, or in some cases for education, family reunion, or other reasons. Unlike refugees who cannot safely return home, migrants don’t face the same fear. If they choose to return home, they will continue to receive the protection of their government.

Refugee or Migrant?

Story 1 Yolita and her family lived in Brazil. Yolita wanted her children to have a strong education and heard that the Canadian system is very good. She decided to quit her job and move her family to Canada.

Story 2 Angelica was born in Somalia. She lived in a small village until a conflict broke out in her country. There was fighting and Angelica’s family moved to a camp sponsored by the United Nations. After many years of living in the camp, Angelica’s family came to Canada.

Story 3 David used to live in the Philippines. He lived there until the devastation of Typhoon Haiyan in 2013, which wiped out his entire house. Luckily, David had family in Canada and he was able to move here by being sponsored by them.

Story 4 Kezo grew up in South Africa with his family. His parents were employed by a multi-national company and his dad was transferred to Canada. His whole family had to move there.
