I can identify parts of an expression using mathematical terms. 6.EE.A.2b
What are the parts of an expression? Constant: a number that stands by itself. (does not have a variable) Coefficient: a constant multiplied by a variable or variables. (the number in front of the variable) Variable: a letter that is used to represent a number. Operation: the mathematical symbol telling us what to do.
Algebraic expression: A number sentence without an equal sign, has at least one variable; two terms and one operation. Term: Each part of an expression separated by an operation.
Constants 2x + 4 + 6x + 2 Coefficients 2x & 6x are like terms because they have the same variable 4 & 2 are like terms because they are both constants.
What are the coefficients of the terms?

How many terms do these each have?
How parentheses affect the number of terms Compare 3 + 4 and (3 + 4). How many terms does each expression have? 3 + 4 has two terms separated by +. (3 + 4) is enclosed by parentheses that serve as a grouping symbol, so this expression has 1 term.
How many terms are in the following expressions How many terms are in the following expressions? 2(x + 5) – 9 6(2x – 5) + 9x - 1
Write the following two term expressions as one term by factoring. 6 + 15 4 + 16
Let’s try with some variables 7n + 21 8d – 12 15r – 10
4. 2m + 2 6z – 27 24k + 16
