The Importance of Bedside Report on CICU References AACN Standards for Establishing and Sustaining Healthy Work Environments (2016). American Journal of Critical Care. Joint Commission (2015). Sentinel Event Data Root Causes by Event Type 2004-2015. Laws, D., Amato, S. (2010). Incorporating Bedside Reporting Into Change-of-Shift Report. Rehabilitation Nursing, 35(2), 70-74. WHY IT MATTERS Targeting Excellence in Patient Communication on CICU: The Joint Commission has identified communication failures during shift reports as a leading cause of sentinel events in the United States. Bedside reporting reassures patients that the nursing staff works as a team, and patients witness a safe, professional transfer of responsibilities. Elliot Hospital (Joint Commission, 2015) When reporting is finished, nurses are aware of the issues their patients are experiencing, and enables them to plan and prioritize nursing interventions. There is currently no protocol for nursing shift change hospital wide. Bedside Report Excellence GOALS Report done at bedside Introducing oncoming RN and asking pt. permission Computer open: labs, vitals, etc. Infusions verified Bed alarm status iBed set appropriately Lines/ Drains visualized If all requirements are met bedside report is “Passed” Any missing are “No Pass” AIM 90% PASS (Laws, D., Amato, S.,2010) The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses’ identified skilled communication as a standard that creates a safe work environment. Cardiac Intermediate Care Unit An initiative was launched on CICU on July 5th 2011 Handoff report at change of shift between RN’s is to be done at patient’s bedside. (American Association for Critical-Care Nurses, 2016) Available resources: RN-to-RN Handoff Checklist CICU Bedside Report Sheet Education Template for RN to RN Handoff Tool WHAT TO IDENTIFY FOR IMPROVEMENT 1. Perceived barriers from RNs on floor 2. Appropriateness of patient for bedside report 3. Use of RN-to-RN Checklist 4. Need for official protocol at Elliot Hospital By: Angela Cobar
