Money Used in Ancient Greece Question1: How was money used in Ancient Greece? Athens is north of Greece. Athens created a currency called Drachma. Athens was the first city-state to make the currency Drachma. Athens used the currency because of the trade system. The trade system brought lots of money to Athens. Athens needed that money so their city-state would be successful. Ancient Greece coins

Money Facts in Ancient Greece Ancient Greece produced coins from silver, gold and other metals. Greece created a system called the barter system. The barter system was used to make money by trading goods or services. In Ancient Greece each city-state created their own coin. When visitors came they had to find a money exchanger to exchange coins. Coins chart 6 obols= 1 drachma 100 drachma= 1 mina 600 mina=1 talent which is the same as 57 pounds of silver.

On each coin there is a symbol of an animal or a God or Goddess on the front or back of each coin. The same Both pieces of money is worth a value. U.S.A. money USA Currency has 2 forms - paper and light weight coins. Each USA city-state uses the same currency. On each dollar and coin there is a picture of a president.
