No comma Cierra got to the top of the slope and she suddenly realized that she had no idea what she was doing. Needs a comma: Cierra got to the top of the slope, and she suddenly realized that she had no idea what she was doing. She was so brave that she decided to give it a try and ended up with a mouthful of snow.

Tip of the Day: Does anything need fixing? John and David couldn’t decide weather they should go to the mall on Saturday because they didn’t know the affect that Christmas would have on the amount of shoppers there. whether (other weather = climate) *effect (effect = end result)

SWBAT: Compare and contrast different views on the American Dream Use think-aloud strategies while reading.

Talk to your partner for 30 seconds– go! Which is better? Why? Talk to your partner for 30 seconds– go!

Excerpt from “Let America be America Again” by Langston Hughes Let America be America again. Let it be the dream it used to be. Let it be the pioneer on the plain Seeking a home where he himself is free. (America never was America to me.) Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed— Let it be that great strong land of love Where never kings connive nor tyrants scheme That any man be crushed by one above. (It never was America to me.) O, let my land be a land where Liberty Is crowned with no false patriotic wreath, But opportunity is real, and life is free, Equality is in the air we breathe. (There’s never been equality for me, Nor freedom in this “homeland of the free.”) Excerpt from “Empire State of Mind” by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys I'm the new Sinatra,  And since I made it here,  I can make it anywhere,  Yeah they love me everywhere,  Off white lexus,  Driving so slow but BK is from Texas,  Me I'm up at Bedsty,  Home of that boy Biggie,  Now I live on billboard,  And I brought my boys with me,  Say wat up to Ty Ty, still sipping Malta Sitting courtside Knicks and Nets give me high fives In New York,  Concrete jungle where dreams are made of,  There's nothing you can't do,  Now you're in New York,  These streets will make you feel brand new,  Big lights will inspire you,  Lets hear it for New York, New York, New York

Your turn: 1. Read two articles w/partner (“Class…” and “Am. Too Materialistic?”) *Note: “mobility” = how much a person can move up or down a social class (a lot of mobility = more people can move up or down a class) 2. Determine two similarities and two differences between the articles’ portrayals of America and the American dream. 3. Use textual evidence to back up your points. *Recommendation= may help to write down the idea of each paragraph in a word or two.

Of Mice and Men: Take two minutes to share your think-alouds with the person next to you. Who is Curley and what is he like? What is Curley’s wife like? When George and Lennie meet different people throughout the book, a lot of these people comment on how strange it is George and Lennie travel together. Why might people consider that strange? At the end of the chapter, what does Lennie want?

Of Mice and Men: Begin reading chapter 3 with the person next to you. Complete think-alouds (out loud) with your partner. Reminder of what to note as you read: Connections Character Visualize Confusion/fix-up strategy Important points

Homework: Finish compare/contrast charts EXIT: Write one difference between the two articles and which view of the American dream you agree with. Explain why. (If you don’t agree with either or if you agree with both, also explain why)
