The Shar-Pei

Would I be a good fit for your family? Before considering me as a rescue there are some things to think about: breed characteristics health personality maintenance cost

The Chinese Shar-Pei: How much do you know? The Breed: Non-sporting group: Hunting and guarding Medium size (40- 60lbs) Hippopotamus head Wrinkles Intelligent Stubborn Loyal Life span (10-12 yrs) The American Kennel Club , AKC (2009)reports: “Shar-Pei” means: sand skin; a sandy coat is considered standard for this breed (although you can find them in chocolate, red, and brindle). They are also the only dog (besides the Chow) that has the “blue-black” tongue. The Shar-Pei originates from China, as far back as the Han Dynasty (c. 200 B.C.). Used for herding, hunting, and guarding- all around worker Highly intelligent, stubborn, and confident Requires much attention, socialization, exercise, and training.

An apple a day? Common Health Issues: Ears Eyes Skin The Chinese Shar-Pei Club of America (2009) reports on the potential health issues for Shar-Pei’s. Here is what they found: Ears- due to the shape of the ear (triangle flap) air is not able to pass through the ear canal and the Shar-Pei is prone to ear infections. Regular cleaning is needed. Eyes- this wrinkle dog can have excessive skin around the eye causing “cherry eye” or the need for tapering (surgical procedure). Skin- these dogs are known for their skin problems. The problems arise from lack of air due to the wrinkles, and many develop allergies (food, allergens, and dermatitis).

But…can we get along? Personality: I am the dog for you if: You have a lot of time and love. You want a loyal dog that is good with children and is easily house broken. Florida Shar-Pei Rescue (2009) tells potential owners that this breed can be: Loyal (family) Aloof (are not friendly with strangers) Can be dog aggressive! Socialization to other animals (particularly other dogs) must be done at an early age. Easily house broken Needs a lot of attention, and bores easily!

A day in the life… Maintenance: Special diet Ear care Skin care Exercise Training Require a lot of attention! The Shar-Pei needs lots of attention and love. They may have allergies and need a special diet prescribed by a Veterinarian. The need regular grooming with regard to ear care, nail care, and skin care. They are by nature a “worker” so they need lots of exercise and training. Socialization is necessary from a very young age in order for them to interact with strangers and other animals; specifically dogs. These dogs are highly intelligent and are bored easily, therefore, need a lot of attention and interaction.

Can you afford me? Potential Costs: Initial: spay/neuter, vaccinations, medical (eye surgery), special food Long-term: special diet, training, ear/nail care The ASPCA outlines the potential costs associated with dog ownership according to size. We can use this as a guide based upon the Shar-Pei’s needs: Spay/Neuter-$200 Vaccinations-$235 (recurring medical) *Other Medical (surgery, ear, eye, and nail care) Food-$120 Training-$110 * These costs can vary and one may consider pet insurance- $225
