National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada December 6, 2012 A day to: Remember the 14 young women whose lives ended in an act of gender-based violence at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal Reflect on the phenomenon of violence against women Take concrete actions to eliminate all forms of violence against women 3

Expectations for the day Engage with members and raise awareness about the day through at least one activity, such as: – A walkabout – An information table – A presentation for a JOHSC – A presentation for staff (lunch & learn) 5

Example Activities from 2011 Stewards: Presented information on violence in the workplace Held a poinsettia raffle fundraiser for a womens shelter Organized walkabouts and drop-in sessions to promote conversations and raise awareness. Stewards said it was a very positive event because it gave people a chance to remember and talk about how they felt or where they were 22 years ago. Definitely created awareness. 6

Example Activities from 2012 Stewards: Organized unit wide pink events with units wearing pink shirts and clothing Held drop-ins and walkabouts with pink cake, pink cookie wafers, and pink bubble gum! Gave presentations on codes and workplace violence 10

International Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) Awareness Day February 28, 2013 A day to highlight: the causes of RSI the need to eliminate those causes the importance of fair compensation for workers disabled by RSI. 11

Expectations for the day Engage members and raise awareness about the day/issue with at least one activity, such as: – Walkabouts – Information tables – Presentations to JOHSCs – Lunch and learns etc. Promote the online discomfort survey on BCNU website Follow up on worksite concerns identified in the survey 13
