STARTING OUT What is your institution’s management style? Or personality? Or modus operandi?

At UMBC, we’re all about shared governance. A very centralized approach may work well for a small, private college with a clear identity and centuries of tradition. At UMBC, we’re all about shared governance.

What does that look like when you’re talking about the university’s social media presence?

This shapes what our social media looks like, what our social media goals are, and how we implement those goals.

GOAL 1: Offer Guidance We generated social media guidelines that serve an educational purpose. We monitor, but do not police, social media.

GOAL 2: Build Community We identified the managers of UMBC social media accounts and invited them to a discussion group.

GOAL 3: Offer Ongoing Training We offer (1) trainings to answer FAQs, (2) info on external resources, and (3) consultation with SM managers and depts. starting or growing social media accounts.

One big question: Social media directory and/or aggregator? Looking Ahead One big question: Social media directory and/or aggregator?
