Main technologies for SSR response White Nile Water supply: No ground water, Nile intake pump, compact treatment plant, water tower, distribution Sanitation: black cotton soils, no available space in camps, block latrines of 4 units (20 people), superstructure with burned bricks East Darfur Water supply: Ground water, water yard (depth 200-300 m with submersible pump and generator), water tower, distribution Sanitation: Steady soils with good clay content, single unit latrines, pit not lined, done with locally available materials (away from plastic sheeting).

Last week progress on SSR UNICEF East Darfur: O&M of water year in Kario camp handed over through WES to CIS White Nile: Call for proposal for the procurement of water treatment (Koika funded) West Kordofan: Support for O&M in El Meiram camps ASSIST South Kordofan: Suragia, Rashad: Drilling of 5 HP (2+, 3-, WES), construction of 40 showers and 300 latrines, distribution of 200 hygiene kits Global Aid Hand & CIS West Kordofan, El liri : 360 latrines construction Oxfam East Darfur, Kario & El Nimir camps After difficulties to get the technical agreement, the WASH team is now on the ground Construction of 200 latrines ongoing Geophysical survey to be conducted

Background The WASH vulnerability study was one of the recommendations adopted from the 2015 Sector After Action Review (2015 AAR) conducted in January 2016 and in line with the overall sector improvement agenda that calls for needs-based programming instead of status-based approaches

Overall objective of WASH study project The overall objective of this project is to study the WASH beneficiaries, define and test a WASH Sector strategy that will lead to reduction of beneficiaries' dependency on WASH humanitarian aid

How will this support WASH sector, planners and decision-makers? Better targeting and prioritization, effective emergency preparedness and response Identify the vulnerable populations and their respective locations in the country in line with the overall sector improvement agenda that calls for needs-based programming instead of status-based approaches Reduction and risk management programs to be established/strengthened in country Support decision-makers in allocating the appropriate resources for preparedness and response Promote tools which facilitate coordination and collaboration of potential partners working on disaster reduction in the region

Study instruments Survey A : (water source mapping ) is to map out the sources of water present in the target communities and their functionality. Survey B : (Household survey) Household questionnaire: data at the household level are collected; this includes income and water sources used.

Study instruments Survey C : (Focus group discussion ) To gather information regarding the operation and management of the present water sources. To analyze WASH Management Committees in place at the community level, including who is in charge of running the costs of operation and maintenance of water sources, To check whether there’s a tariff system in place, and what type of water sources are primarily used. Training of trainers (TOT) 1 TOT training has been conducted at IOM office in Khartoum 10 participants have been trained , TOT trainees were selected among IOM, WES, and HAC staff together with representative from targeted communities 7 GOAL staff were trained in El Fasher as trainers of enumerators for the survey in Kutum.

Enumerators’ training 20 data collectors (Enumerators) have been trained at Rwanda camp in Tawaila- North Darfur 18 Enumerators have been trained at Orchi returnees’ villages in Um Baru – North Darfur 18 Enumerators have been trained at Kalma camp – South Darfur

Conducting the Survey WASH study has been conducted for the following sites: Rwanda camp : 3,388 households have been studied out of 4,812 households which represent 70 % from total population 35 water sources have mapped and studied 1 Focus group discussion has been conducted

Conducting the Survey 2- Orchi returnees’ villages : 1130 households have been studied out of 1614 households which represent 70 % from total population 7 water sources have mapped and studied 1 Focus group discussion has been conducted
