Activity 1: Meet Your Neighbor Share: Your name Agency/company

Why Are We Here? Traffic crashes can happen to anyone at any time Education can prevent injuries and deaths We can make a difference before a crash occurs Nationally certified CPS technicians can make a difference

Course Expectations Stay for the entire course Use your workbook and participate in class discussions and hands-on activities Pass all assessment/skills evaluations Attend checkup event Ask questions

Assessments Three skills tests Three written quizzes Must pass each one Three written quizzes Must get a total of 42 out of 50 correct (84%) May use all available resources Your workbook is your #1 resource No retests are allowed. If you fail to score 42/50 correct – you must retake the entire class ‘Open book’ does not mean easy

When You Successfully Complete This Course, You Will… Be a nationally certified CPS Technician Know the basics about vehicle occupant protection Be able to talk to parents/caregivers about CPS

National CPS Certification Program: A Partnership NHTSA Developed the original curriculum in the mid-1990s Updates content as needed National CPS Board Oversees the quality and integrity of the training and certification requirements Certifying body – Safe Kids Worldwide Responsible for administering all aspects of certification

Diversity and CPS Respect differences in attitude, behaviors, and the needs of each caregiver Become familiar with NHTSA’s position on diversity Remember that diversity includes gender, cultural, age, religious, as well as, community differences

Communication Sets the Stage for Learning Be aware of your attitude: Encourage learning while teaching and demonstrating Be aware of your body language/facial expressions Explain, don’t lecture Be patient and positive Be prepared to explain the information in another way
