Sander safety

Sanding is used to remove small amounts of material from surfaces, and to make them smoother.

Sandpaper is a form of paper where an abrasive material has been fixed to its surface.

Grit size Grit size refers to the size of the particles of materials embedded in the sandpaper.

Grit size Some common grit sizes are: 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 150, 180, 220, 400 The higher the grit number the smoother the finish will be.

6” belt / 12” disc sander guards belt Miter gage disc Tilting tables Tilting adjustment On / off switch

1” belt / 5” disc sander

Oscillating spindle sander

Sander safety tips: Make sure belts and discs are correctly mounted Make sure the belt runs in the center of the platen. Make sure the disc is not loose.

Sander safety tips: Make sure all guards and tables are securely locked. Only adjust them when the machine is off.

Sander safety tips: Make sure the table is not too far away from the sandpaper. It should be 1/16”. Table gap 1/16”

Sander safety tips: Hold small and irregularly shaped pieces in a hand clamp.

Sander safety tips: Do not use the sanders to shape parts if it can be better performed on other machines.

Sander safety tips: Let the machine attain top speed before using. Keep the stock in motion to prevent burning. Keep the material flat on the table. Never force material into the sander as hard as you can.

Sander safety tips: Only sand on the side of the disc that is moving down towards the table.

Sander safety tips: You may use a miter gage to guide material on the belt or disc sander.

Sander safety tips: You may tilt the table to sand a bevel.

Sander safety tips: Never sand the face of a board on the belt / disc sander.

Sander safety tips: Use the oscillating spindle sander to sand curved edges.

Sander safety tips: Always unplug the sanders before changing the sandpaper.

Sander safety tips: Always wear eye protection. You may use dust mask and ear plugs. Make sure to turn dust collector on and have the gate open.
