Plot and Events Jem and Scout get air rifles for Christmas, but Atticus refuses to teach them, so uncle Jack does Atticus says to Jem “I’d rather you shot at tin cans in the backyard, but I know you’ll go after the birds. Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” pg. 99 The children learn that Atticus is defending a negro in court and get teased about it pg. 99 Jem and Scout spot a mad dog and tell Calpurnia pg. 102 Atticus comes and shoots the dog pg. 106-107 The children learn that Atticus was the best shot on Finch’s Landing and was known as “One Shot Finch” pg. 107-108

Characters We find out that Atticus can shoot a gun, but won’t. Miss Maudie explains to the children “If your father’s anything, he’s civilized in his heart. Marksmanship’s a gift of God, a talent – oh, you have to practice to make it perfect, but shootin’s different from playing the piano or the like. I think maybe he put his gun down when he realized that God had given him an unfair advantage over most living things. I guess he decided he wouldn’t shoot till he had to, and he had to do it today.” We learn that Atticus “wore glasses. He was nearly blind in his left eye, and said left eyes were the tribal curse of the Finches. Whenever he wanted to see something well, he turned his head and looked through his right eye.” We are introduced to the sheriff, Mr Heck Tate, and learn that he is a terrible shot. “He was as tall as Atticus, but thinner. He was long-nosed, wore boots with shiny metal eye-holes, boot pants and a lumber jacket. His belt had a row of bullets sticking in it. He carried a heavy rifle.”
