Background LPS: 7 years of offering hybrid College Courses to HS Students Origin of Offering Interpersonal & Intercultural as Hybrids Linked Learning, CCCLLI, Career Pathways Trust, and Measure N Charter Schools in Oakland Community college and high school collaboration Strong Connection and integration between high schools and postsecondary institutions Embedded dual enrollment within career-focused learning communities Student perception as authentic college experience where students can “try on” college student role and view themselves as capable of doing college work Action Research Elements to study Student interest and motivation Student success in the academic content Ways in which course improved readiness of students to be successful after graduation Ways in which systems learned from experience and adapted systems for possible expansion

Academic Results: Merritt-LPS Online-Hybrid Dual Enrollment Courses Course: Merritt IP F 15 S 16 F17 S17 LPS Success Rate: 72% 94.5% 72% 72% Course: Merritt IC S 16 S 17 LPS Success Rate: 100% 100% LPS Oakland 2016 Graduates All but 3 received community college credit 90% passed 2 or more UC / CSU transfer courses 7% earned more than a semester of credit

Role of Communications in Pathways: Most HS Dual Enrollment Programs Ignore Prerequisites HS Students are cherry-picking pathways, with no actual requirement of prerequisites HS Administrators’ knowledge or training in the importance of Communication Communication as an Essential Element of College Readiness Most students reported feeling better understanding of engagement with others Students believed that the courses improved their communications skills in three important areas: - Aware of listening as a communications skill - Using “I” statements to resolve conflicts in their daily lives - Aware of the culture and race of others, rather than focusing only on their own race

Summary Guide Students to College & Communication Success: - Administrators continue to allow students to choose Pathway BUT - Require students to take Hybrid Interpersonal & Intercultural

Today & Future Fall ’18: 5 Oakland Charter HS (10 Courses) Program expansion to other State Districts - MOU, Course Implementation Assistance - Training of College Instructors - Training of HS Facilitator & Counselor
