Research assignment Create a timeline on the history of women’s. Each decade must include one picture or drawing. Step 1 = Title of timeline Step 2 = 3 key examples from the 1920’s Step 3 = 3 key examples from the 1930’s Step 4 = 3 Key examples from the 1940’s Step 5 = 3 key examples from the 1950’s Step 6 = 3 key examples from the 1960’s Step 7 = 3 key examples from the 1970’s Step 8 = 3 key examples from the 1980’s Step 9 = 3 key examples from the 1990’s Step 10 = at least three sources must be listed!!!

Assessment Prompts = Talking Heads 19th amendment leads to women’s suffrage. This newfound freedom led to women breaking traditional roles in regard to behavior…….FLAPPERS 2’s = 1930’s The Great Depression makes it difficult for women to get jobs outside of the home. Eleanor Roosevelt becomes a champion of women rights by promoting ideas concerning education and even birth control.

1’s = 1940’s WW2 leads to women taking jobs reserved for men in factories in order to win the war. “Rosey the Rivetier”. Women also serve in the armed forces for the first time….except the Marines. 2’s = 1950’s Tough time for women, who despite their gains during WW2 are seen as baby makers and housewives, leading Betty Freidan to write her famous book “The Femine Mystique” challenging women to break out and live for themselves. Freidan also founds NOW (National Organization for Women), for the purpose of demanding equality at home and in the workplace.

1’s = 1960’s President JFK names Francis Perkins to his cabinent, the first female ever to serve in that way. He also signed the Equal Pay Act of 1963. In addition, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination against women in the work place. 2’s = 1970’s Roe Vs. Wade guarantees a women’s right to an abortion. Title IX ends discrimination in schools, leading to women’s sports.

1’s = 1980’s Sandra Day Oconnor becomes the first female to be named to the Supreme Court. 2’s = 1990’s 1992 dubbed “The Year of Women”. 24 million women vote, resulting in the election of 24 women in the House of Reps and 5 in the Senate. 1993 Family and Medical Leave Act is signed into law, guaranteeing women the right to take maternity leave. Madalyn Albright becomes the very first female Sec of State.
