2.5 – Jamestown: The First English Colony Summary: After several attempts, the English established their first permanent colony at Jamestown in Virginia. Vocab: John Cabot: Italian explorer living in England, who sailed across the Atlantic, and eventually settled in present day Newfoundland, Canada “The first colonists at Jamestown settled in an area they believed would be easy to defend against American Indians and the Spanish.” (teachtci.com)

2.5 The Lost Colony of Roanoke Summary: Great Britain’s first attempt at a permanent settlement off the coast of North Carolina, it eventually failed when supplies ran low. Conspiracies still exist for what happened to its 100+ inhabitants. http://www.history.com/topics/jamestown/videos/mystery-at-roanoke Vocab: Sir Walter Raleigh: English noble who tried to start their first colony, Roanoke.

2.5 Settling Jamestown Summary: Vocab: After several attempts, the British established their first permanent colony at Jamestown in Virginia in 1607. While set up as a proprietary colony (to make money), its climate and swampy land made farming difficult. Vocab: London Company: Formed by a group of merchants, this company hoped to start GB’s first moneymaking colony. John Smith: Took control of a failing Jamestown in 1608. He brought a renewed vision and hard work eventually saving the colony. Pocahontas: Chief Powhatan’s daughter who is credited with helping John Smith save Jamestown.

2.5 Jamestown Starves & Survives Summary: After Smith returned to England, and the Indians refused to trade with colonists, Jamestown began to starve. The decline of the colony led to increased tensions with the natives and the kidnapping and imprisonment of Pocahontas. In the spring of 1610 a new shipment of supplies, colonists and soldiers revitalized the colony. Vocab: John Rolfe: Married Pocahontas and made tobacco a cash crop in the colony.

2.6 – New Netherland: The short-lived Dutch Summary: Hoping to find the NW Passage, the Dutch set sail. In 1609, the Dutch landed in present day New York. In 1621 merchants officially started the colony along the Hudson river. Fur trading made this colony profitable and their relationships with the Iroquois tribe set the stage for a rivalry with the French and Huron Tribe. Eventually, the English pushed the Dutch off the land and New Netherland becomes New York. Vocab: Henry Hudson: English sailor, sponsored by the Dutch, who landed them on the shores of present day NY. Dutch West India Company: Proprietary company who officially founded the colony.
