Motivation This paper mainly deals with South Korea’s effective aid management Korea received huge amount of aid during 1960s & 1970s (USD12bn) Korea exceptionally used foreign aid effectively as its supportive for economic development. Korea has successfully transformed itself from an aid-receiving country to a donor country. Korea’s experience with effective aid management can be a lesson to developing countries.

Cont… In 1960s and 1970s foreign assistance played a critical part in bringing about Korea’s miraculous economic growth.

Purpose To examine the role and impact of foreign aid in bringing economic growth to South Korea. Research Question What was the role of foreign aid in the economic development of Korea during its early state building period? What were the strategies used by government to insure aid effectiveness?

Contribution A few studies have attempted to explain systematically how foreign aid was deployed effectively to support economic growth in South Korea. (Delay 2005) and (Hubbard 2005) Therefore, this paper fills the gap in-depth analysis of the South Korean case to contribute for the discussions of foreign aid and economic development empirical and theoretical implications by adopting historical methods.

Cont… This study contributes a step towards finding answers to the question of the role of foreign aid in bringing economic development of a recipient country. Numerous studies have addressed the question of why aid fails, relatively few rigorous studies examine why or how aid works.

Structure of the paper First the paper briefly discussed about overview and general characteristics of foreign aid. Then, the next discussion presents the roles and management of foreign aid in Korea. Finally, conclusion and some lessons for developing countries has been discussed.
