Quick reference guide to the 2014 Primary Maths Curriculum

Calculation Methods Pupils are expected to use the traditional methods. Please refer to your information booklet for more details regarding these.

Mathematics Test Papers Children will sit three tests: Paper 1, Paper 2 and Paper 3. Paper 1 is ‘Arithmetic’ which lasts for 30 minutes, covering calculation methods for all operations, including use of fractions, percentages and decimals. Questions gradually increase in difficulty. Not all children will be expected to access some of the more difficult questions later in the paper. Papers 2 and 3 cover ‘Problem Solving and Reasoning’, each lasting for 40 minutes. Pupils will still require calculation skills but will need to answer questions in context and decide what is required to find a solution.

How to help your child… Support and reassure, praise and encourage. Promote best possible attendance at school. Routines. Make sure your child has a good sleep and a healthy breakfast each morning. Find opportunities for your child to use numbers in everyday situations and encourage them to work out calculations in their head. Encourage pupils to tell the time.

Revision ideas. Concentrate on areas of weakness, not what they can do easily. Refer to ‘How did I do in my tests’ sheets in pupils books for areas of strength and weakness. Short bursts of revision(20minutes). Put revision post it notes in appropriate places around the home. Revision guides Internet e.g. Mymaths, Woodlands Junior Learn & practise times tables, play time tables games. Look for examples of 2D and 3D shapes, discuss its properties. Identify, weigh and measure quantities and amounts in the kitchen. If it is 400g how many kg is that? Play games involving numbers and logic such as dominoes, card games, darts, draughts and chess.

What are we doing in school? Promoting test techniques. Arithmetic papers Practising areas highlighted from SATs tests and work in class. Interventions- Extra tuition, booster sessions and revision clubs. Self assessment and opportunity for reflection to identify strengths and weaknesses in own learning Fun and varied revision lessons tailored to pupils needs. Access to interactive websites/games to aid learning. Revision sheets/tasks/study guides. Reward revision. Analysis of last years SATs papers have been carried out and we are using this information to help move our pupils forward.

Scaled Scores and Reporting Pupils will be told if they are ‘at expected standard’ or if they are ‘below expected standard’. To meet expected standard pupils need to get a scaled score of 100. Last year this was 57/110 marks. However this may change!
