Presentation transcript:

Before: What is point of view and how does it impact how you feel about an event? After: Give evidence from the video to support how point of view can change how you view a situation or event.

Point of View: vantage point from which the story is told Add to your notes! Point of View: vantage point from which the story is told First Person-the narrator participates in the action of the story (Frederick Douglass) Third Person- Narrator does not participate in the action of the story as a character, but does let us know how the characters feel Omniscient aka “all knowing”-narrator who knows everything about all the characters Limited Omniscient-narrator whose knowledge is limited to one character

Today’s Reading Task (Use the Cornell Notes format) Chapter 3 Chapter 4 How did Colonel Lloyd keep the slave boys from taking his fruit? Why was it particularly difficult to be the slaves in charge of Colonel Lloyd’s horses? What is ironic about Colonel Lloyd’s treatment of his horses compared to the treatment of his slaves? What happened to the slave who told Colonel Lloyd the truth about his master? What is a maxim? Why is Mr. Austin Gore a “first-rate overseer”? What is the irony of this description of him? What is ironic about his name? What reason does Mr. Gore give for killing Demby, the slave? What other examples does Frederick give of his statement “that killing a slave, or any colored person,... is not treated as a crime, either by the courts or the community”?

Writing Response: What point of view is the story of Frederick Douglass told? Now imagine it was told from a different point of view. Choose one of the other points of view and write the first chapter from the point of view. For example, you may choose to write it in Third Person from Frederick’s mother’s perspective. Narrator does not participate in the action of the story as a character, but does let us know how the characters feel
