Activities *evaluate prof. dev. Activities *review the prof dev. Budget Chair - Committee Chairs will also serve on the Coordinating Committee Administrative Development Committee Classified Development Committee Chair - Committee Chairs will also server on the Coordinating Committee Faculty Development Committee

Needs Assessment Surveys K+S Use models as a springboard Consider constituency group focus groups to tweak for your college Design instrument to capture both common and different employee group needs Include items on preferred delivery method and timeframe Do annually Use as foundation and refer to in plans/activities Samples provided

Evaluations K+S Determine areas of most valued feedback Include items on “application” of knowledge/skills learned and connection to better serving students and/or campus If activity funded by grant or special funds, construct items that provide needed reporting data Samples

Budgeting K Research which pots “available” and under purview of Coordinator: General Fund Student Equity, SSSP, Basic Skills Grants (i.e. Title V) Increase in Base Allocation Funding for Increased Operating Expenses Utilize Needs Assessment and Committee to determine line items such as: Campus Wide Initiatives (i.e. Retreats, Leadership Academy, Technology Training…) Memberships Support for travel and other projects identified by individuals, constituency groups or divisions Presenters/Facilitators Hospitality Supplies Sample Review

Developing a Program for All Employee Groups ALL At College of the Canyons, all workshops are open to all employees Use Needs Assessment & Strive for balance of activities that - Address specific employee group needs - Support common training (i.e. technology) - Provide opportunities that intentionally bring together all constituencies (i.e. Retreats, Leadership Academy, Collegial gatherings, Community Service…)

What is FLEX? K 1981 Legislation (AB 1149) allowed colleges option of adopting Flexible Calendar Program. Colleges can choose to reduce 175 day instructional calendar from 1-15 days Purpose: To provide time for faculty to participate in developmental activities related to staff, student and instructional improvement.

What Counts as FLEX? K Activities must fall under 9 areas in Chancellor’s Office annual report Course Instruction and Evaluation Staff Development In-Service Training & Instructional Improvement Program and Course Curriculum or Learning Resource Development and Evaluation Student Personnel Services Learning Resource Services Related Activities Such as Student Advising, Guidance, Orientation, Matriculation Services, and Student, Faculty, and Staff Diversity Departmental or Division Meetings, Conferences and Workshops, and Institutional Research Other Duties as Assigned by the District Other Category that Contributes to the Improvement of Instruction, Administrative, or Student Services

What Counts as FLEX? K FLEX must be non-compensated, and take place OUTSIDE of regularly scheduled duties such as classes, office hours and other contracted duties. Campuses develop process to determine which activities will count under each category such as -On Campus FLEX “Days” & Workshops -Pre-approval by Dean and/or Committee -Development of “Pre-Approved” activities list - RHC sample Visit: http://www.riohondo.edu/staff-development/pre-approved-flex-activities/

FLEX Reporting L Campuses must track & maintain records for at least 3 years to include: -Proof all full time & part time instructional faculty completed required FLEX obligation for year or had pay “adjusted” accordingly -Proof of completion of Individual FLEX Plans annually for all FT & PT faculty -Documentation of completed FLEX activities for all FT & PT Annual Flexible Calendar Program Certification that details all proposed FLEX activities by their appropriate Chancellors office category due to Chancellor’s Office by June 1st Online FLEX Reporting system sample – Visit: http://rio.flexreporter.com/app/login.php

Getting Support for Your Program S+L Chancellor/President support essential At College of the Canyons: FT Administrator in Professional Development District funding Expectation that all employees will participate in on-going Professional Development included in all job announcements Chancellor presents workshops several times a year Board of Trustees hosts workshop during fall and spring FLEX week and attends nearly all Professional Development events

Getting Support for Your Program S+L Communicate with administrators about upcoming events and ask them to encourage their employees to attend. Ask administrators to provide office coverage so employees can attend. Tie everything you do to one of your college’s strategic goals.

Ask the Experts Individually, write down 1-2 questions you still have about a professional development issue Gather with 3 others from different colleges 1st person to share is person who’s been a PD Practioner the longest. All share name, college, length of time in PD related position & questions In large group, offer top question to the Experts (AKA Each Other)
