Tahoe Tyrol Training Structure Defense Wildland Drill 6-30-16 South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue

Tahoe Tyrol Training A structure protection and structure triage drill under simulated fire conditions Consisted of 7 other fire organizations from around the lake. To train and prepare for a multi agency wildland urban interface event.

What is structure protection? Where crews are going ahead of or actually in the fire front protecting and or prepping the structures that are going to be impacted by fire. Often times resources are extremely limited and engines are going from house to house deploying and re deploying hose lines

Training overview Start of Fire

Training Overview Start of Fire

Training Overview South Lake Fire Rescue and Lake Valley Fire units were dispatched to a well established vegetation fire at the bottom of Keller Rd

Training Overview First in units arrived to find a well established fire at the bottom of the Tahoe Tyrol community with structures immediately threatened. Additional resources are then ordered. (Neighboring agencies)

Training Overview Simulated fire became well established in the community and threw embers onto a house with a shake roof

Training Overview Wood shake roof on fire Embers from the house and roof are causing spot fires.

Training Overview Resources were then assigned structures to defend Each driveway was marked with a cone with a summary of the issue present at the structure

Deployment and redeployment of hoselines

Training Overview We did not ask the residents to do anything different the day of the training. Such as taking cars off the street or putting away of large items We wanted to the training to be as realistic as possible We worked through the narrow street with parked cars

Defensible space suggestions

Defensible Space This is an example of ground fuels in contact to a dead tree next to a wooden deck which is attached to the one of the homes

Wood Shake Roofs

Pine Needles

Conclusion Thank you to the Tahoe Tyrol Commuinity This drill reinforced the need for fire agencies to work together as well as allowed us the opportunity to train together. It also reinforces the need for defensible space
