What is the cardiovascular system? Also sometimes known as circulatory system consists of the heart, blood vessels (veins, arteries and capillaries) and the approximately 5 litres of blood that the blood vessels transport. It is the network that delivers blood to the body's tissues. With each heartbeat, blood is sent throughout our bodies, carrying oxygen and nutrients to all of our cells
Every day, the approximately 5 litres of blood in your body travels many times through about 96,560 kilometres of blood vessels that branch and cross, linking the cells of our organs and body parts. From the hard-working heart, to our thickest arteries, to capillaries so thin that they can only be seen through a microscope, the cardiovascular system is our body's lifeline.
What does it do? Responsible for transporting oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and cellular waste products throughout the body, the cardiovascular system is powered by the body’s hardest-working organ — the heart
4 Major functions 1. To transport nutrients, gases and waste products around the body 2. To protect the body from infection and blood loss 3. To help the body maintain a constant body temperature (‘thermoregulation’) 4. To help maintain fluid balance within the body
What does it consist of? Heart Arteries Capillaries Veins
The heart The heart is a muscular pump that provides the force necessary to circulate the blood to all the tissues in the body. Its function is vital because, to survive, the tissues need a continuous supply of oxygen and nutrients, and metabolic waste products have to be removed It has 4 chambers; Left and right ventricles which pump blood out of the heart Left and right atria which receive blood entering the heart It beats about 100,000 times a day
Veins Veins are blood vessels that carry blood from various tissues of the body to the heart. contain valves that prevent blood from flowing backward. The two largest veins are the superior and inferior vena cavae
Arteries Arteries are strong tubes, or vessels, that carry blood from your heart to the rest of your body. Arteries transport blood containing oxygen and nutrients to smaller tubes called arterioles, which then deliver blood to even smaller vessels called capillaries.
Capillaries Capillaries are the smallest blood vessels in the body. They allow water, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other nutrient and waste substances to exchange between blood and surrounding tissues. A network of tiny capillaries connects the arteries and veins. one of the most important parts of the circulatory system because it is through them that nutrients and oxygen are delivered to the cells
Two circulatory systems The pulmonary circulation is a short loop from the heart to the lungs and back again The systemic circulation sends blood from the heart to all the other parts of our bodies and back again.
