What is a region? Regions… Identify areas with shared characteristics Can be based on physical, cultural, economic characteristics or a combination of characteristics Can be vague, overlap and/or exclude areas APHUG/Olson/ CH 1

Region Definitions An area with one or more common features that make it different from surrounding areas. An area of Earth defined by one of more distinctive characteristics. An area having one or more common factors that are found throughout. An area with unifying factors.

Functional or Nodal Regions Functional Region Also called a nodal region Organized around a focal point or node which diminishes outward Tied to node by transportation or communication systems or through economic or functional associations New Technology is breaking down traditional functional regions.
