Grade Five Open House The Fifth Grade Team Mrs. Merrick, Mr. Cleary, Mrs. Lavallee, Mr. Smith, Mrs. McCone, and Mrs. Kudrikow

5th Grade Collaboration Classrooms located in proximity to one another. Work together and plan common experiences for our students. Things to look for: “ Harry and Harriett” and Grade Five Science Fair. We are also exploring ways to provide some opportunities for students to mix amongst the four classrooms during the math block as well as STE team building activities. Half day Science immersion.

Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers PARCC Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers ELA/Math Reflects Common Core Standards Makes better use of Technology Spring 2016

MCAS Science Typically multiple choice with written responses. Two days in May.

How can parents help at home? Students must arrive to school on time. Expected to be in the classroom and working by 9:05am. Students should enter the classroom quietly, courteously and with all materials needed for the day.

How can parents help at home? Please consider setting aside a small, quiet work space for your child at home to complete homework and daily reading. The CREW Binder with Agenda is a valuable tool used by all fifth graders and should be considered an integral part of their homework. Parents role should be supervisory in regard to homework. Homework is the student’s responsibility. Support your child’s out-of-school reading.

Reading Workshop We all agree that readers read a lot! We will provide extensive, authentic reading experiences in the classroom. As our students read more, the better readers they become, so too with writing. .

This Year in Reading Following Characters into Meaning Non-Fiction Research Projects Comparing Ideas Across Texts Genre Studies Fantasy (Books Clubs) Historical Fiction

Writing Workshop Did you know that fluency in writing is just as important as fluency in reading? We will be giving students every opportunity to develop a love for writing. The more children become comfortable with the process of generating ideas, and writing and revising their work, the better writers they will become. Look for and sign Friday Letters!

This Year in Writing Memoir Informational Writing Research Based Argument Literary Essays Poetry Fantasy Historical Fiction

Small Moment Writing Students will be using small moments that matter to them as a spring board for their stories. These small moments come from places in which our children have strong emotions. Contentment (noticing the stars on a warm summer night). Excitement (catching a fish with an uncle). You can help your child develop a habit for observation.

Evaluating Writing You may notice that when we evaluate our student’s writing, we are not embarking on an error hunt. We will be looking for mastery of the targeted skill.

Mathematics Developing student’s critical thinking skills. Solving real world mathematical problems. While solving problems, they will also be required to explain their thinking. Mathematical discussion is imperative. Students will be taught and expected to use traditional algorithms. Parent Help - Practicing basic math facts (+,-,x,÷).
