Evidence – ‘All The Worlds a geography Stage’ Criteria evidenced:)A3b (B1c) This initiative encourages pupils to take notice of the wider geographical world when not at school. Pupils are encouraged to watch news programmes and look out for issues in the news which are linked to the geography they have been learning. Pupils then get the opportunity to have their efforts shared and celebrated on ‘the stage’. By participating in the initiative pupils develop their vocabulary, their ability to locate places , their empathy for other people and their skills to interpret data. A3b Pupils show evidence of involvement in further geographical study and/or extra-curricular learning related to geography. Evidence 19: Year 9 entry for RGS ‘Young Geographer of the Year competition Evidence 20: Year 10 entry for the ‘Outstanding Geography Student’ competition -Predicting the Eyjafjallajokull eruption Justification: We wanted to encourage involvement with extra-curricular learning and to instil a sense of competition amongst the girls. This year we entered Year 8 & 9 into the RGS Young Geographer of the Year competition and selected year 10 girls into the Outstanding Geography Student Competition. The Year 9 girls were undertaking a unit of work on Rocks and Landscape and using the iGeology app to compare rock types in Devon to the rest of the country. We fitted the title for the competition about differences between Physical Geography in the Local area to the National Picture. Year 10 girls produced essays about monitoring and prediction of the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull which was part of our Tectonics unit which helped stretch and challenge our girls. Oswestry School This slide shows evidence of the Geography lunchtime Club and the guest lectures on the Marathon de Sable and Everest. These were inspirational extra-curricular opportunities related to geography and were organised by a member of the department.

EVIDENCE: Geography Society pupils meeting visiting speakers (Dr Simon Oakes, Dr Pete Langdon and Dr Garrett Nagle) EVIDENCE: School hosts an A Level revision conference for visiting schools and teachers, supported by the GA ISSIG. City of London Freemen’s School Attendance at sessions with visiting speakers. EVIDENCE: Geography Society visit to the Royal Geographical Society as part of school ‘City Visit’.

EV5-A3b – Extra-curricular learning in relation to Geography St Ivo School Geography Department – SGQM Application – Supporting Evidence EV5-A3b – Extra-curricular learning in relation to Geography The below provide evidence of just some of the extra-curricular learning that takes place in relation to Geography within the department. Geography Club Eco-Ivo – Years 7-13 St. Ivo The weekly Geography club have undertaken a number of activities involves further study and research in Geography, including a project on the Arctic and animal adaptations. A team from the club also participated in the World Wise Quiz held by the local GA branch. The Eco-Ivo committee consisting of students drawn from all key stages are very active in organising, attending and running events and activities which raise awareness of environmental and sustainable issues. Photos above show just some evidence, competition with a local recycling company, activities for climate change week, fair-trade chocolate fountains, stall at local town fayre. The full range of activities and most recent and upcoming events are detailed in the Centre of Excellence application.

This provides evidence for A3b, B1b Jessica Mead, Year 9, MGGS, receiving her award at the GA conference and an extract from her report published in the GA magazine. On Hardanger Fjord , Norway (Our prize trip Sept.2014) This provides evidence for A3b, B1b In 2013 Discover the World teamed up with the GA to offer Geography students across the UK an outstanding opportunity aimed at Y9/10/11 students. Jessica Mead, Year 9, was one of two selected entries representing MGGS. Jessica won the school FIVE places on an incredible 5-night trip to Norway (September 2013). She also received a GA certificate, which was presented by Dame Ellen McArthur at the GA annual conference in Derby.
