So you think you know your colors? (the Stroop effect) Why? The words themselves have a strong influence over your ability to say the color. The interference between the different information (what the words say and the color of the words) your brain receives causes a problem. There are two theories that may explain the Stroop effect: Speed of Processing Theory: the interference occurs because words are read faster than colors are named. Selective Attention Theory: the interference occurs because naming colors requires more attention than reading words.

What does the brain do? wave hands in the air eat hop up and down on the right foot walk around the classroom look out the window Sing your country’s national anthem Solve for x in 5x + 14 = 34. Give directions from here to Sarali’s Read the following sentence aloud: “Four score and sevn years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Brainstem The brainstem is the part of the brain that connects the brain and spinal cord. This part of the brain is involved in coordinating all the things you need to do to live - many basic functions such as heart rate, pumping blood, breathing, eating, digesting food, sleeping, waking up. It is essential for all movement (motor) and sensory communication between the body and the brain.

Cerebellum The cerebellum coordinates the brain’s instructions for skilled repetitive movements and for maintaining balance and posture. Helps you jump, walk, play ball, and pick things up. Controls all of your movements and balance. Your cerebellum is the reason you don't fall over all the time!

Limbic System The limbic system is where your emotions live. It is involved in regulating emotions, motivations, and movement. It includes the amygdala and hippocampus, which is important for memory formation.

The diencephalon contains the thalamus and hypothalamus The diencephalon contains the thalamus and hypothalamus. The thalamus is involved in sensory perception and regulating movement. The hypothalamus is an important regulator of the pituitary gland, which directs the release of hormones throughout the body.

The cerebral cortex Brain Parts The cerebral cortex makes up the largest part of the brain mass and lies over and around most of the other brain structures. It is the part of the brain responsible for thinking, perceiving, and producing and understanding language. The cortex can be divided into areas that are involved in vision, hearing, touch, movement, smell, and thinking and reasoning Brain Parts

Testing your Cerebellum & Interactions between lobes Stand up Balance on your LEFT leg Balance on your RIGHT leg Balance on which ever leg was easier Now, close your eyes….go on, close them! What happened?

Interactions between lobes Balance is a complex task, your brain needs to use multiple parts to complete it To balance on your right leg, you use 1. Cerebellum 2. Occipital 3. Cerebrum

Hemispheres Spatial abilities Language Face recognition Math Logic RIGHT LEFT Spatial abilities Face recognition Visual imagery Music Language Math Logic

But how does information get from one hemisphere to the other? The Corpus Callosum = communication between the left and right sides of the brain

Left Side of Brain Right-hand control Spoken language Math abilities Written language Scientific skills Reasoning Right-hand control

Right Side of Brain Left-hand control Music awareness 3D forms Art awareness Imagination Ideas

Imaging the brain Link from Utah Genetics Link on brain imaging from PBS

When comparing the images in Set #1 with the images in Sets #2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, how is the activity of the brain in each of these sets different from Set #1’s?

The PET images shown in Set #1 show brain activity in a resting brain. The images in Sets #2 through 6 show activity in the brains of humans who are doing different tasks. When you look at the PET scans and the chart in question #3, what generalizations can you make about the activity of the brain when different tasks are performed?

Subject is listening to music Subject is looking a picture with patterns and color Subject is performing a thinking task Subject must remember an image for later Subject is hopping up and down on one foot
