INTERGRATED WASTE MANAGEMENT by MATSHEDISO MOLOI 1

1.INTRODUCTION BACKROUND OF THE PROJECT We have embarked on this project to promote a healthy environment for the learners and local community. Awareness campaign should be promoted through environmental teachings. They must be taught how this unhealthy environment is going to affect their lives. REASONS FOR SELECTING THIS TOPIC What is the real problem? Dumping Community dumps waist near the school. This creates an UNHEALTHY ENVIRONMENT STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Why is it a problem? Disturbs the flow of the traffic (road gradually closing). Pedestrians (learners) shares the road with traffic. Overflowing of septic tank Rain water causes dongas on the road. WHY DID I CHOOSE THIS PROBLEM Health hazards Environmental pollution Protection of underground water 2

3 LEARNERS GOING TO SCHOOL OVER-FLOWING SEPTIC TANK

2.PROCEDURES FOLLOWED TO SOLVE THE PROBLEMS (ACTION PLAN: AWARENESS CAMPAIGN) Who did I consult with? Educators Parents (meeting) Community members(interview) Council members Library(sources of information) TV(sources of information) 4

5 PARENTS MEETING AND COUNCIL MEMBERS

3.UNHEALTHY ENVIRONMENT waste management INTERGRATED WASTE MANAGEMENT What is waste? Solid waste Hazardous waste IDENTIFICATION 6

TOXIC AND HAZOURDOUS MATERIALS Cleaning products Paint and building products Gardening and pest control products Automotive products General products SOLID WASTE Septic tank or sewage system 7

HAZARDOURS & SOLID WASTE 8

4.IMPA CT SOLID Much production Garbage Pollution IMPACT HAZARDOUS Toxic Catches fire easily Reactive Corroding 9

SOLID WASTE Impact at school 10

HAZARDOUS A case whereby a learner was burnt from burning waste: Pesticide container burst. 11

WAYS OF DEALING WITH SOLID AND HAZARDOUS WASTE WASTE MANAGEMENT Burying? Burning? Recycling Reuse POLLUTION (WASTE) PREVENTION Using methane gas (case study) Shipping? 12

5.ACTIVITIES DONE IN THE CLASSROOM [ weaving plastic mats] 13

Talking about waste 14

ACTIVITIES DONE OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM (AT THE DUMPING SITE) 15

CURRICULUM LINKS AND ALIGNMENT OF LEARNING AREAS 1.BASWA LE MEETSE COMPETITIONS 2.CELBRATING WATER WEEK 16

FORMAL ASSESSMENT 17

6.CHALLENGES Community not co-operative Council members take too much time before addressing the problem. During rainy season, learners using the passage, experience difficulty. 18

7.RECOMMENDATIONS Community should make dumping sites in their yards. They should pay for their services. Council members should meet community members to discuss and come up with solutions to the problem. Proper control of rain water be introduced. 19

8.WAY FORWARD No dumping of waste near the school.(clean environment) Protection of underground water(parents should protect the borehole) in the school yard so that in turn learners do like wise. Municipality should make tarred road with speed humps. (protection of pedestrians, preferably learners). Water should be channeled, and a walk-path be made. Warning signs be available, e.g. pedestrian crossing, dumping free area. 20

NEXT LEVEL MY AIM IS TO TRANSFORM THIS DUMPING SITE TO A PLAYING GROUND 21

9.CONCLUSION Let us manage our waste so that we can live in a healthy and pollution free ENVIRONMENT LEARNERS, PARENTS, EDUCATORS and the COMMUNITY lets join hands to be “ENVIRONMENT WISE” people. 22
