11/5/12 BR- Can you describe one of the rhetorical devices from Friday 11/5/12 BR- Can you describe one of the rhetorical devices from Friday? Give an example? Today: Preparing Your Speech for Presentation Speeches will begin on Thursday, November 8 Missing Assignments due Wednesday, November 7! Review Rubric Speech Dellivery Peer feedback

Where are you at? You should have completed the Rough Draft. Get it back from the “hand back” folder if you haven’t already. You should be thinking about the attention grabbers and powerful closers (get a sheet if you haven’t) you want to put into your speech You should be thinking about rhetorical devices you want to put into your speech

Let’s Read.. “Meets Standard” descriptions for “Delivery” What does a well delivered speech look like? Dramatic pauses Raised volume Dramatic body language (e.g. arm gestures, facial expression) Others? Take a minute to practice your ABC’s Volunteers?

What Next.. Transfer your speech (with all the new parts) to a clean piece of paper. I would suggest tying it out (18 font, triple spaced) Get into pairs or groups of three. Practice giving your speech Offer Comments (“your problem is to big. You don’t really explain why I should care.”

Is this really happening? Yes. You are writing a speech and delivering it in front of the class.

“But I Can’t Mr. Mac!” Bull. Get up and talk about something that is important to you. Be specific, use the work you’ve done and do your best. Talk for at least a minute but no more than two minutes. You will not die.

Suggestions Time your speech Record it on your phones, play it back (yes, your voice is going to sound funny) Give your speech to your friend, mom, little brother, dog, imaginary friend, teddy bear. Practice facial expressions in the mirror (its weird, but it helps)

Reflection – do now! What are you worried most about? How are you going to prepare
