Unit 2 Computer Systems HND in Computing and Systems Development Maintenance Unit 2 Computer Systems HND in Computing and Systems Development

Learning Outcome 4.0 Be able to undertake routine maintenance on computer systems Software maintenance: upgrade software eg virus definition files; patches/updates; scheduling maintenance tasks; utility software eg defragmentation, clean-up, back-up, system profilers; other third party utility software eg compression utilities, spyware/malware removal Hardware maintenance: upgrade hardware; install and configure new peripherals eg printers, scanners; install and configure additional or replacement devices eg hard drive, memory, graphics, sound, optical media, network; cleaning equipment File management: manage files/folders; back-up procedures

Learning outcomes LO4 Be able to undertake routine maintenance on computer systems 4.1 perform routine maintenance tasks on a computer system 4.2 upgrade the hardware and software on a computer system Mainly assessed by witness statement

Maintenance schedules (for a heavily used machine) Daily Weekly Monthly 6 months Yearly Security Anti malware quick scan Anti malware full scan C: Verify malware up to date Verify firewall Check updates Change passwords Clean up Clean temp files Clean registry Remove obsolete files Uninstall unused applications Data integrity Backup Verify backup Full backup or image Disk health Quick defragment C: CHKDSK C: Full defragment C: Full defragment C: CHKDSK all disks Check free space Full defragment all disks SMART check all disks Hardware Clean Check BIOS Check batteries

Witness statement ACTIVITY  Anti-malware scan   Uninstall unused applications Verify firewall Take and verify a backup Check updates Defragment hard disk Change passwords CHKDSK and SMART all disks Clean temporary files Check BIOS updates Clean the registry Check driver updates Remove obsolete files Clean and remove dust (Proliant)

Automation Several of the activities in the schedule can be automated When you do the tasks on the witness statement you need to use automation wherever possible Task scheduler Policies

Desktops Individually perform the majority of activities on your virtual desktop or the lab desktop Take screen shots as evidence If you don’t know the procedures, research them

Servers HP Proliant used for cleaning exercise Maintenance manual on studshare in HND folder Refer to the manual for disassembly procedures Work in pairs to identify and photograph all dirty areas that require cleaning, then reassemble Do NOT clean it (needed for next group) Assignment will require you to identify cleaning methods to be used
