PHYSICAL FITNESS
is a set of abilities that one possesses in order to perform physical activities.
is the ability of an individual to perform daily activities efficiently without undue fatigue.
is the functional capacity of the body that allows an individual to have an improved life.
Fitness components
Physical fitness is made up of 3 major components namely: 1 Physical fitness is made up of 3 major components namely: 1. Health – related physical fitness 2. Skill – related physical fitness 3. Physiological fitness
Health – related physical fitness
- consists of specific components that have a relationship with good health; or a lower risk of illness, particularly hypokinetic diseases and conditions
Skill – related physical fitness
- Consists of components that have a relationship with learning motor skills quickly and the ability to achieve a high level of performance in sports.
Physiological fitness
- its components can be measured using more expensive equipment and in a laboratory or medically - supervised facility.
Elements of fitness
flexibility It is the ability of the muscles to move joints with ease beyond the normal range of motion without strain and injury.
Muscular strength It is the ability to carry out work against a resistance.
cardio – respiratory endurance it is the ability to do and continue physical activities involving the whole body for a long period of time without fatigue.
agility it is the ability to move and change direction quickly.
coordination it is the quick linking and transmitting of messages from the central nervous system to the different parts of the body.
speed it is the ability to perform a movement or cover a distance for a short period of time. it refers to the rate of movements as in running and walking.
power it is the ability to release maximum force very quickly.
