Meanings of Division Lesson 1-6

MATH Essential Questions Why do we say multiplication and division are inverse operations? MATH Essential Questions

Today’s Lesson Today you will learn that division can be thought of as repeated subtraction.

Use the cups to illustrate. Pair Share How can you use cups to show that division can be thought of as repeated subtraction or sharing equally? Use the cups to illustrate.

Take a minute to share with your partner. Sharing is Caring Think of a situation in which you shared something equally with other people. Take a minute to share with your partner.

Use the white boards to illustrate. The Problem Sophie has 8 sticker sheets and she wants to give 2 sheets to each of her friends. How can you tell the number of friends that will receive stickers? Can you use repeated subtraction to solve? Can you draw a picture? Use the white boards to illustrate.

When Do You Divide? A museum wants to display a collection of 24 gems on four shelves, placing the same number of gems on each shelf. How many gems will be on each shelf? Can you make a model to solve?

Draw a Picture to Help You Solve These Problems (You can use the whiteboards) You put 18 people into 3 rows. How many people are in each row? Rocco is putting 14 drawings into 2 art binders. How many drawings are in each binder? Kevin is arranging 12 chairs in 3 equal groups. How many chairs are in each group?

In this lesson, you learned how to draw models to solve problems. Wrapping it Up In this lesson, you learned how to draw models to solve problems.

Reflection for Notebook: State the main idea of today’s lesson.
