The partial- Quotients Division Algorithm Grade 5 Lesson 4.2 The partial- Quotients Division Algorithm Objective: To review the partial-Quotients division algorithm with whole numbers

Amy is 127 days older than Bob. How many weeks is that? How did you find the answer to this problem? One way to do this is to note that there are 7 days in a week. So 127 days divided by 7 (days in a week) would be…. 18 R 1. Or 18 weeks and 1 day. You could write that 127 / 7 127 ÷ 7 7 127 or 127 7

Given a dividend and a divisor, the partial-quotients algorithm is one pencil and paper strategy for division. 18 R1 127 -70 57 - 56 1 Solve 7 127 We can ask how many 7’s are in 70 10 because 10 * 7 = 70 So if I rename 127 into 70 + 57 I can divide 7 into 70 first (I will get 10) And then 7 into 57 next How many 7’s into 57? 8 because 7 * 8 = 56 And I have 1 left over. The answer then to 127 / 7 18 R 1 The means (is, yields, or results in) Where as = means equal to

IN class work Complete page 101 in your student workbook titled The partial-quotients division algorithm in class. This is an independent activity. Put your flag up if you need help.

Game As a group, play division dash (student reference book page 303) Division dash uses randomly generated numbers to obtain values for 1 digit divisors and 2 digit dividends. Try to calculate these mentally, but if you cannot, you are allowed to use pencil and paper. If your dividend is less than your divisor, record the quotient as 0. Only record the whole number part of the quotient.

HOmework Complete page 104 as homework. Complete page 105 as enrichment work. (Exploring divisibility by the digits) Refer to your divisibility rules handout in your math ISN for additional information.
