To begin: Imagine you are a soothsayer, how will you predict outcomes from Rome’s conflict with Carthage. And so it begins:

Objective : to map the expansion of Rome by 1. viewing the map of Rome from 500-264 BCE then 2. Examining the Punic Wars and predicting their outcome, noting the cause(s) and effect(s) of each war 3. mapping how each of the 3 PW’s expanded Rome geographically 4. comparing the 2 maps

First: Read intro: (review) add anything to notes that you learned, add areas to map Then. Read info in packets- predict, check answers in white packet (what I would lecture) Add info to notes Add areas to each map after each PW for how Rome expanded.

The Rise of Carthage

NEXT?-flesh this out from lecturette -wealthy Carthaginian merchants & landowners establish an oligarchic republic. -Council of four hundred (like senate)-set up trade-quinquereme used (good rammers!) 264BCE controlled N. Africa, Corsica, Sardinia, parts of Sicily, the Balearic Islands, E. Spain and Strait of Gibraltar. (locate onto map) Carthage = superpower= 1.5 mill people (colonies & allies)-in contrast Rome less than a million-however Rome thought they could take them-Histories written by Polybius documents stand off…

First Punic War

NEXT?-flesh this out from lecturette 264 BCE Rome gets a quinquereme- added corvus-made sea battle into land battle-had several victories Storms and battles set Roman back Hamilcar Barca-defeats Roman fleets-raids Roman and Sicilian coasts “Man of Lightening” 245 BCE treasury empty but Roman citizens donate wealth one final fleet built (minus corvus) Naval battle off Sicilian coast-Romans choke Carthage, cut them off-they sue for peace. 241 end first PW Huge fine (talents paid)-give up prisoners, evacuate Sicily-can’t sail in Roman waters…map new territories of Rome

The Beginning of the Second Punic War

NEXT?-flesh this out from lecturette Hannibal led army over Alps =surprise Elephants & diverse troops=never mutinied=most believed in him and expected to make it across Alps 5 months to cross entered Po Valley in N. Italy-two tribes from N. Italy joined him (he was that motivational) Hannibal quickly defeated Roman army and began an assault on the Italian peninsula.

End of second Punic war-before Battle of Zama

NEXT?-flesh this out from lecturette 202 BCE Hannibal recruits to face Scipio. Sent spies-to Roman camp located by Zama-Scipio captured and returned them! Ha! Morale buster This inspired the two to meet but… Battle at Zama=slaughter of Carthage, Hannibal advised a peace treaty-201 BCE harsh terms from Rome: Carthage gives up Spain, Mediterranean islands, no elephants, burn all but 10 ships, fine for 50 years-cant go to war with out Rome permission Eventually Rome demands Hannibal-Carthage turns on him@!

The Third Punic War

NEXT?-flesh this out from lecturette Romans determined to destroy and humiliate Carthage- Demands: turn over 300 noble children as hostages all weapons & machines Leave city and rebuild (deal breaker) Freed slaves to fight, Rich gave up wealth – hair rope, Valiant effort for 3 years 146 BCE city fell

Roman Republic 500-44 BCE

Check objective Using the two maps explain where Rome was able to expand Can you explain the cause and effect of each Punic War? The importance of the Battle of Zama Can you name 2 leaders from Carthage? Roman leaders? During the PW’s?
