Standards and Objectives SWBAT identify specific life experiences that shaped Hemingway’s identity. SWBAT explain how Hemingway’s life experiences influenced his identity and literature.

Ernest Miller Hemingway 1899-1961 Part of “The Lost Generation” Won the Nobel Prize in Literature Saw violence and death first-hand as an ambulance driver in WWI His protagonists were strong, silent men who often dealt awkwardly with women His wartime experiences formed the basis for his works "When you go to war as a boy you have a great illusion of immortality. Other people get killed; not you ... Then when you are badly wounded the first time you lose that illusion and you know it can happen to you."

DO NOW! In one to three complete sentences, explain what it means to be modern. Be ready to share your thoughts with the class.

MODERNISM & MODERNITY Modernity: the quality or condition of being modern Characteristics: industrialism, urbanism, development of science New technology and the horrifying events of both world wars (particularly WWI) made many people question the future of humanity WHAT WAS BECOMING OF THE WORLD? Modernist literature spoke on the self and consciousness. Instead of progress, Modernist writers saw cold machinery and increased capitalism, which alienated the individual and led to loneliness. Modernism: literary / cultural movement in the arts; artists’ responses to modernity (1890s-1945) *High point: 1910-1920

In Our Time Published in 1925 – Hemingway was only in his early twenties at the time Made of vignettes drawn from different spheres of life Vignettes: brief description, episode, or account Considered a modernist text because the linear stories are broken up with fragments Hybrid literary form – RADICAL FOR THE TIME! Pay close attention to the protagonist, as well as how Hemingway portrays the male psyche
