Deductive vs. Inductive

Overview Deductive writing is a more traditional form of composition. Deductive writing puts the thesis, a proposed truth according to the author, in the introduction. Body paragraphs follow the thesis with several examples, details, and specifics. Some of the benefits of this method are that it’s easy to write, read, and grade. Most developmental writing courses teach this approach to composition. Hence, the traditional 5-paragraph essay. Inductive writing is a constructivist model of composition. Inductive writing first provides examples then leads the readers to a thesis. The thesis is often in the conclusion. This approach to writing is more difficult to execute, yet it sounds more sophisticated and professional.
