Sophomore Integration: All About Volunteerism By: Anna Peterson Ashley Ellsworth Caleb Wichman Austin Pyrz Emily Pierson Tanner Pingel

Heartland Family Services What I thought: They provide food and water for families in need. They provide shelter for families. Provide an all around better life for the homeless.

Heartland Family Services What I learned: It was a supported housing complex. Sixteen apartments to mainly focus on families. To be eligible to stay at the Heartland Family Services you need to be homeless or have a disabling condition. Focus on goals and budgets to achieve a better life.

The Salvation Army I thought the Salvation Army just raised money by the bell ringers in the front of stores and provide necessary items to the needy. In truth they do 5 times as much ranging from disaster relief to aiding in church projects to raising money and clothing to give the unfortunate. Their motto is "Doing the Most Good".

The Salvation Army Disaster relief teams Community Care Ministries Christmas Charity (Bell Ringers) Its a international movement and an evangelical part of the universal christian church. Non-Profit Organization

MICAH House (What I Thought) I thought the MICAH House took in families who can't afford a house until they are able to find an affordable house or apartment.

The MICAH House (What I Learned) Mission in Community and Housing (MICAH) House is for homeless families No singles unless women Rely heavily on volunteers Donations Tons of volunteers 11 full-time staff 2 part-time staff 18 cans serves one meal Houses single men with kids Families set short and long term goals

Crossroads of Western Iowa (What I Thought It Meant) I thought that the Crossroads of Western Iowa was a place that helped the mentally ill. I learned that they also help physically disabled people too. They also offer jobs for the people that go there and it gives them a chance to learn how to work. They also help them set goals so that they can try to get a job in their community.

Crossroads of Western Iowa "The Mission of Crossroads of Western Iowa is to empower individuals to actively seek out opportunities for an enhanced quality of life." Crossroads of Western Iowa serves individuals with developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities, chronic mental illness and brain injury. They offer jobs to people that go there. They get work from OTC, G&G, they also have a recycling job on site.

Crossroads of Western Iowa The mission of Crossroads of Western Iowa touches the lives of more than 300 individuals, their families and their communities through residential, work and day service.

The American Red Cross I thought that the Red Cross mostly just did blood donations and that they came to schools.

The American Red Cross History: Established on the battlefield. Facts: Mascots: Scrubby bear, Whale, and Ernie the truck. Relies heavily on volunteers, donations, and blood. Makes pet first aid kits.

The American Red Cross Meals on Wheels delivers 120-130 meals a day and all the drivers are volunteers. Diet types: regular, diabetic, mechanical soft. Disaster, armed forces, international, health and safety. Responders: canteen, assist families, relieve burden, make sure basic needs are met, comfort and care, and restaurant on wheels.

Boys and Girls Club What I thought: I expected to see a place for the kids to play and be active An area for the kids to do homework A place for kids to go have fun

Boys and Girls Club What I learned: Its a safe place for kids to go after school. They have studying rooms for children to do their homework and get help. They get kids active by playing in the gym. They push kids to read so they meet their reading level or higher. Lots of fun activities: pottery/ dancing

Volunteering in our Community In our community we could have a spring cleaning day. We could choose a day to help clean up the city park. People could choose to either: Plant trees Plant flowers Pick up litter Rake yards
