THE RIVER HIZ!

The river Hiz is a river which runs through Hitchin.

THE RIVER HIZ TRAVELING! The source of the river Hiz is a small chalk fed spring in Priory Park, and heads through a small amount of streets and then makes 2 tributaries, one called the Oughton, and the other is called the Purwell .The two tributaries join the river Ivel at Henlow and then the Ivel joins the river Flit, which is by Woburn Abbey safari park , I bet you didn’t know that there's a river there! Next the Flit travels a few miles and ends at Langford.

Why is the river called hiz? First of all the Romans made a town by the river Hiz. The Romans named the river Sicka, which translated to English from Latin means Dry. Several years later the Welsh invaded and conquered the town and then they named the river Hicce , pronounced Hiche. Several years later the Anglo Saxons invaded and won the battle and then they named the river, Hiz and it has kept that name since.

These are some pictures I took at the River Hiz.

WILDLIFE AT THE RIVER HIZ! Although the river is small, the river Hiz attracts a great amount of wildlife. There are many birds around this area, which include swans, mallards, coot, kingfishers and in winter there is lots of seagulls. Fish inhabit the river (trout mainly) and there is also evidence of otters. .

FASCINATING FACTS! The river Hiz is actually a small tributary!!!! On the 15th of November 2007 the river dried out!!!! The town is called Hitchin because of the name of the river!!!
