INFORMATION SESSION MODEL EXAMPLE OF SESSION CONDUCTED BY ITSOWEL

STEP ONE - EDUCATION The Italian speaking community requires education on Residential Care in particular how to reach the decision stage, the steps involved before being able to access residential care, the different levels of care and the financial aspects. An Information Session was presented to the Italian community focusing on Residential Care

STEP TWO - SPEAKER A suitably qualified speaker needed to present the seminar preferably someone experienced in residential care Staff with a good knowledge of Italian would act as “translators” and “interpreters” in the presentation.

STEP THREE - NETWORK Networked with CEO of a residential care facility with a large number of Italian residents. The issues effecting the Italian aged community in regards to residential care were discussed. The CEO of the residential care facility was invited to present the seminar with the assistance of “interpreter/s.”

STEP FOUR – PREPARING THE PRESENTATION The speaker was asked to prepare the seminar as a hard copy for review by the CPP Coordinator. The presentation was to use simple language with clear cut examples which the participants could easily understand. After editing, the presentation was translated into Italian in order to facilitate interpreting. Simple Italian was used avoiding difficult or unfamiliar terminology.

STEP FOUR - continued The speaker, “interpreters”, manager and CPP co-ordinator met to review the presentation and clarify any points which could cause confusion. The speaker and “interpreters” rehearsed the session.

STEP FIVE - INTERPRETERS The presentation was shared between two “interpreters”, one who “interpreted” the information part of the segment and the other the financial aspects, which was delivered with the use of overhead transparencies showing examples. Staff with an understanding of the topic and a very good knowledge of the Italian used by the participants were used as “interpreters”.

STEP SIX - EVALUATION The session ended with an opportunity for questions. An evaluation was performed at the end of the session verbally and in writing. Due to the level of written Italian it is easier for evaluations to be carried out verbally.
