Global learning examples D: Developing understanding of sustainability. The samples of work in this presentation were submitted by these schools as part of their applications for the Geography Quality Mark in 2016: English Martyrs Catholic School; Chiltern Hills Academy; Glebelands School; Poynton High School; Witton Park School. Geography Quality Marks: http://www.geography.org.uk/cpdevents/qualitymarks/#top Some slides in this presentation reference the Geography Quality Mark Standards

A1c Pupils demonstrate skills … (including) independence and critical thinking and are able to develop reasoned arguments The work shown demonstrates some of those skills. There is evidence of high level thinking in the climate change mind map. Chiltern Hills Academy A1c Pupils demonstrate a high level of skills specific to geography, such as enquiry and fieldwork, as well as independence and critical thinking in collaborative and independent contexts. They reach clear conclusions and are able to develop reasoned argument to explain their findings and are able to work constructively with others.

B1b: links with the wider world and enrichment activities. Students learned about the tropical rainforest and how plants and animals adapt to their surroundings – they then had a list of attributes and created their own animal/creatures and described why it is suitably adapted for life in the TRF. Witton Park School involved Primary students – we liked how this offered opportunities to be creative, and introduce some strategies to younger students before they moved up to the school. Some lovely outcomes here.

Eco Martyrs stall at Eco Schools Conference – DeMontfort University Example Mission & completed activity Eco Martyrs: Summary of research Eco Martyrs Blog Email to all EMS staff informing of the new building End-User Guide and videos from Eco Martyrs English Martyrs Catholic School Context: The department is responsive to innovation within the school and the geography education community and makes effective use of links with other agencies and the wider community in order to inform and enhance the geography curriculum. Justification: The EcoMartyrs after-school club have developed links with institutions in developing their practical approach to issues of the environment and sustainable development. For instance: promoting the ‘Mission Walk’ campaign following sessions with Katie France from the national charity ‘Living Streets’; and investigating issues of sustainable building design with links to Dr. Paul Cropper at DeMontfort University, which have also been posted on an EcoMartyrs blog. The Eco Martyrs also attended the Eco Schools Conference at DeMontfort University where students attended a range of workshops, shared some of their findings and promoted their ‘Mission Walk’ campaign which they hope will be adopted by other schools within the city and beyond. The EcoMartyrs also recently hosted a Sustainable Cities visit, where they shared their findings on energy monitoring and sustainable travel to a number of representatives from the (P)eterborough (E)nvironment (C)ity (T)rust including the Chief Executive Officer (Carly Leonard) and Project Manager for Middlesborough Environment City (Brian Simpson). Email from LCC: EcoMartyrs hosting Sustainable Cities Network with representatives from PECT EcoMartyrs & DMU collaborative video D1c Innovation within the school effective use of links – focused on sustainability Geography Quality Mark samples for GLP 2016

Geography Quality Mark samples for GLP 2016 Students at English Martyrs see the relevance of geography to them. Geographical concepts such as interdependence and sustainability are interwoven through a range of SoWs to engage students in an enquiry-based approach to contemporary geographical issues. For instance: proposing sustainable strategies for water supply and management through CAFOD’s ‘Thirst for Change’ campaign, students show passion in writing a persuasive letter to David Cameron. Geography Quality Mark samples for GLP 2016 Meet Dr. John Crooke John is the CEO (big boss) for ‘The Living rainforest’. It is a charity organisation and only has limited funds. John is organising a campaign and can only focus on one human impact on the rainforest. He has hired you as environmental consultants to decide which human impact his company should tackle in 2016. Glebelands School used a scenario to raise student engagement in their planning for what to do to encourage groups to protect an area of rainforest… Geography Quality Mark samples for GLP 2016

Impacts people have on the rainforest. Place all the social cards. High impact Affects few people Affects lots of people Glebelands School pupils explored the environment and the impact humans have on the rainforest, by deciding where to place cards on the matrix. Low impact Geography Quality Mark samples for GLP 2016

Geography Quality Mark samples for GLP 2016 Can true sustainable development ever be achieved? Justification for Achievement: Lessons are planned at PHS to encourage students to question the world around them, challenge stereotypes and perceptions; and stimulate awe and wonder. Hooks are used at the beginning of lessons for all year groups. These could be questioning images, rich questions or finding the links between images and objects. Students are given the opportunity to debate current issues such as migration, sustainable development and membership of the EU. They are constantly encouraged to consider other points of view besides their own. Poynton High School – critical exploration of sustainability What’s the link?
