A1c Pupils demonstrate skills … (including) independence and critical thinking and are able to develop reasoned arguments The work shown demonstrates some of those skills. There is evidence of high level thinking in the climate change mind map. Chiltern Hills Academy A1c Pupils demonstrate a high level of skills specific to geography, such as enquiry and fieldwork, as well as independence and critical thinking in collaborative and independent contexts. They reach clear conclusions and are able to develop reasoned argument to explain their findings and are able to work constructively with others.

B1b: links with the wider world and enrichment activities. Students learned about the tropical rainforest and how plants and animals adapt to their surroundings – they then had a list of attributes and created their own animal/creatures and described why it is suitably adapted for life in the TRF. Witton Park School involved Primary students – we liked how this offered opportunities to be creative, and introduce some strategies to younger students before they moved up to the school. Some lovely outcomes here.

Justification: The EcoMartyrs after-school club have developed links with institutions in developing their practical approach to issues of the environment and sustainable development. For instance: promoting the ‘Mission Walk’ campaign following sessions with Katie France from the national charity ‘Living Streets’; and investigating issues of sustainable building design with links to Dr. Paul Cropper at DeMontfort University, which have also been posted on an EcoMartyrs blog. The Eco Martyrs also attended the Eco Schools Conference at DeMontfort University where students attended a range of workshops, shared some of their findings and promoted their ‘Mission Walk’ campaign which they hope will be adopted by other schools within the city and beyond. The EcoMartyrs also recently hosted a Sustainable Cities visit, where they shared their findings on energy monitoring and sustainable travel to a number of representatives from the (P)eterborough (E)nvironment (C)ity (T)rust including the Chief Executive Officer (Carly Leonard) and Project Manager for Middlesborough Environment City (Brian Simpson). Geography Quality Mark samples for GLP 2016 Can true sustainable development ever be achieved? Justification for Achievement: Lessons are planned at PHS to encourage students to question the world around them, challenge stereotypes and perceptions; and stimulate awe and wonder. Hooks are used at the beginning of lessons for all year groups. These could be questioning images, rich questions or finding the links between images and objects. Students are given the opportunity to debate current issues such as migration, sustainable development and membership of the EU.
